Cheap fire/smoke bomb

 by sumplesnoob
Ever wanted to create a ninja fire bomb with a poisonous smoking aftermath for under $3.00? Here's what you'll need:

Tinfoil - you have some in you kitchen, I guarentee you.
Scisors - they're in the drawer above the one you found the tinfoil in.
Matches - go find your child, he's playing with them.
6 Ping Pong balls - they cost around $2.00 at your local sporting goods store, they come in packs of 6.

Open up the ping pong balls and drill a hole in one with a cork screw, then widen the hole by putting a scissor blade in the hole and twisting.

Unless you breathe a lot of it, you won't die, and it can be cured if you can get hold of some ozone. In some hospitals the do cure it. Carbon dioxide is not poisonous but Carbon Monoxide is, and can be cured with ozone. Anyway nice instructables.

I've made this a couple times, and it's worked fine every single time. But something interesting happened the second time I made it. Instead of releasing a nice little jet of flame, it emitted a mass of dark grey smoke for several seconds. Interesting variations of this that crossed my mind were sticking this in the end of a piece of pvc pipe, more ping pong shards in a larger container such as a tennis ball, or simply to put more holes. I wouldn't be at all suprised if this could be variated into a bomb in one way or another. I have to say that this will likely be my favorite instructable for a long time to come. Outstanding job.

Thank you, I will most likely try that; I'll let you know how it turns out!

How'd you know it was poisonous?
jakee117 says: Sep 5, 2007. 9:50 AM
ive done this and if u just put some caps from cap guns in there and heat the foil from the out side it will work better 4 fire but if u want smoke do not do that (duh)
czenob says: Sep 2, 2007. 2:22 PM
IDK mine worked like a small rocket engine (had thrust) BUT.. no smoke came out
topkillz says: Jun 29, 2007. 2:06 PM
are u serious eis this real poisonous smoke or just regular some u just wants us to think its poisonous
Gloom in reply to topkillzAug 25, 2007. 6:41 PM
yeah...burning plastic, any plastic, is a bad idea. By "bad idea" i mean of course tons of fun if you're outside, but you really don't want to breathe any of that smoke, it IS very bad for you. So, just stay out of the smoke.
topkillz in reply to topkillzAug 7, 2007. 2:04 PM
thanks fo answering me guys =]
babybackribs in reply to topkillzJul 25, 2007. 3:39 PM
yeah, its just normal smoke, people smoke and breath CO2 and (i dont know abbreviation for Carbon Monoxide) Carbon Monoxide and all sorts of other deadly poisons in all the time so it doesnt matter...just normal smoke
privetprivet in reply to topkillzJul 3, 2007. 5:46 PM
no it is not poisonous it is just smoke
Jaxorama in reply to topkillzJun 29, 2007. 2:45 PM
If he's burning the plastic balls then the mixture released would contain such gases as Carbon Monoxide and perhaps some others and yes, they are poisonous, but to such a small degree that you'd have to be breathing in entire lungfulls of the gas, which I'd doubt you'd do.

basically smells like a PortaPotty kk??? :D this reminds me of the last Halloween i had! i had some saltpeter smokers and then just filled them in ping pongs and had matche heads in them! i had like 20 so it was a fun night :D
Flaming pants says: Aug 11, 2007. 3:18 AM
Me and my dad made em a few days ago, me made the hole really small at the top and the flames went up a metre or so. heaps of smoke, heaps of fun, great job on the instructable man, we used a sparkler we cut it in quarters, pushed it into the middle of the ping pong balls hole, and caught the sparkler on fire at the top, took 2/3 secs for the sparkler to burn down into the ping pong ball, smells real nasty as well.

SnuffyDaPenguin says: Jul 21, 2007. 7:08 PM
Rather than lighting it, couldn't you cut of some match heads and stuff them inside if the ball along with the rest of the balls, so when you throw it on the ground it'll give a small "boom" and light on it's own?
sumplesnoob (author) in reply to SnuffyDaPenguinJul 22, 2007. 7:22 PM
Great idea!
SnuffyDaPenguin in reply to SnuffyDaPenguinJul 21, 2007. 7:09 PM
And as Remote Man said, the sugar/saltpeter bomb is as good as they come...Is it possible to fit some of the "caramel" into the bomb along with matches or whatever else?
big-jamie says: Jul 16, 2007. 7:46 AM
ping pong balls are made from celluloid which is created from nitrocelulose and camphur. many things used to be made from celluloid, but it caught fire too easily, therefore today celluloid isnt used to make, near enough anything, apart from ping pong balls.

just thought i'd let you know _ lol
DonQuijote says: Jun 28, 2007. 2:03 PM
how bad does it stink, i mean, is it even remotely possible to use it in a semi-enclosed area, like a balcony for example? because i could think of a really nice prank on my grandma.... and she does not leave the house much....
stevoIution in reply to DonQuijoteJul 16, 2007. 1:13 AM
The smoke smells kind of like eucalyptus leaves but you probably don't live in Australia so this will be of no help. I didn't mind the smell but I haven't done it for 10 years.
sumplesnoob (author) in reply to DonQuijoteJun 29, 2007. 2:29 PM
Its only poisonous in an enclosed space. Basicaly, get a lung full and its bad, its ok to inhale a little bit.
ll.13 in reply to DonQuijoteJun 28, 2007. 4:03 PM
It smells really bad. it might be Ok if the wind is favourable.

I did this ages ago, I got it from xinventions.com
TheCheese9921 in reply to DonQuijoteJun 28, 2007. 2:48 PM

ac1D in reply to TheCheese9921Jun 28, 2007. 3:50 PM

Has been in the Anarchist Cookbook since 1967. I had fun with this.
duct tape in reply to Good DoctorJun 28, 2007. 3:25 PM
The Anarchist Cookbook is pretty awesome.
stevoIution in reply to duct tapeJun 29, 2007. 2:30 AM
If you like half baked, text based instructions written by teenage american morons, on devices only a complete dead-shit would have an actual use for, yeah it's really 10/10.
RwpTechAdMin in reply to stevoIutionJul 15, 2007. 3:56 AM
Isnt that the point!!!!!!
Good Doctor in reply to stevoIutionJun 30, 2007. 2:23 AM
Oh yeah, true true. Lord help me I smoked peanut shells and dried out banana peels, due to that book. Though it is smart in areas, like monkey wrenching. Not a totally worthless book by any means.
duct tape in reply to stevoIutionJun 29, 2007. 11:18 PM
lol. It's not like I do any of it, because I'm not an anarchist. nice flame.
stevoIution in reply to duct tapeJul 1, 2007. 1:03 AM
Ha ha, If you know the potential of duct tape you're alright. Cable ties / zip ties are my fastener of choice.
Remote Man says: Jul 12, 2007. 7:30 AM
you just CANNOT beat the ping-pong smoke bomb for ease or production X amount of smoke. If you put up 5 ping-pong balls and put them all inside one, it is pretty much THE best smoke bomb around, excluding the sugar/saltpeter mix.
privetprivet says: Jul 6, 2007. 4:12 PM
it's just smoke
Pbyrd says: Jun 28, 2007. 6:39 PM
Why would you want a smoke and fire bomb with toxic gases? I ain't no expert but aren't toxic gases a bad thing?
stevoIution in reply to PbyrdJun 29, 2007. 2:26 AM
Not for an anarchist wannabe I guess.
Hungry_Myst says: Jun 28, 2007. 10:43 PM
Humm, I would like to stress a little more that you really should do this in a well ventilated area, and hopefully you don't breathe in the smoke... If you want something a little safer (and probably a little more effective, tough I've never tried either myself) there is always the Potassium Nitrate + sugar option (Google smoke bomb).
lemonie says: Jun 28, 2007. 6:34 PM
Out of interest, what's the Ninja connection? I checked The Official Ninja Webpage, but it didn't mention bombs, mainly 'flipping out' and wailing guitars....? L
