Step 1: Materials

you will need:
zip ties
ide cable
electrical tape
razor bald
mat to cut on

i also recommend that if your cable is lumpy rub it on something

cuting your cable... not a good idealooks good though

Actually splitting the cable isn't bad as long as you don't knick or cut one of the conductors. In this 'ible the author splits every other wire because every other wire is ground, which may or may not be a better way to do it.

Some of the older IDE and Floppy cables came with their wires split at some point in the middle, as in individual wires, instead of one flat cable...

well im saying this 'cuz i only have one ide cable

i've read in a lot of places that the cables should be kept in pairs, due to interference from other components
thermoelectric in reply to ganeyAug 21, 2009. 4:36 PM
I doub;t that would help, Because they would need to be twisted pairs to cancel out interference

the finished look is nice! I also LOVE that you've still got that old heap, er I mean lovely, absolutely lovely computer running! Saves IT from the landfill... and save YOU having to buy a second computer! Bravo! Now the bad news(well, one correction, and 3 suggestions so not BAD) Correction : Slot1, not socket 1 :-) Suggestion : Start the divide with the blade, the PEEL the wire away from it's kin. You're muck less likely to knick the cable, and need extra tape to insulate the exposed wire. Suggestion 2 : after you get the wires split, lay the 90 degrees from the connector(or remove the ide connector all together) and slip on a piece of heat shrink tubing that JUST fits. Electrical tape is function, but heatshrink looks professional! and you the don't need the zip ties! (if I haven't already given away the computer I did this too, I'll take some picts and postm.) Suggestion 3 : Don't try this with the 80-wire cables. those little guys are just plain fragile when seperated. Even trying to split off 2 at a time doesn't work too well.

Very good idea. I am tired, too, of those pesky flat cables.
