Introduction: Chinese Lucky Cat-O-Lantern

This will show you how to make your very own Chinese Lucky Cat-O-Lantern!

Step 1: Step 1- Make the Pattern

First, draw a pattern based on a Chinese lucky cat. Try to make it carve-able. Color in the sections that will be carved out with a permanent marker, then make a photo copy (you can reduce the size at this point if needed, depending on how big your pumpkin is)

Step 2: Step 2: Gather Your Tools

You will need a medium to large size pumpkin, carving knives (I used ones from a store-bought pumpkin carving kit), an awl to mark out the pattern (or something else that will let you poke holes), a gouge tool (or small flat-head screwdriver) and masking tape. You'll also want something to scoop out the messy pumpkin insides with.

Step 3: Step 3: Cut Out Lid, Scoop Out Insides

Figure out where on your pumpkin the top of your pattern will be. Mark this with a piece of tape, so that you don't cut the lid beyond it. Cut out your lid, then scoop out the pumpkin insides. Yum!

Step 4: Step 4: Attach and Mark Out Pattern

Now, you will want to attach your pattern with masking tape. Using the awl, punch small holes to mark out the pattern. This will allow you to "connect the dots" when you carve. Note: For the small circles on the paws, I punched all the way through with the awl. Be careful though, because it is easy to mess them up.

Step 5: Step 5: Connect the Dots, Carve the Pumpkin

Now you get to start carving! I find it easiest to cut out the larger pieces first, and then work on the smaller details. For the whiskers, medallion and the lines on the paws, I used a gouge tool to carve into the pumpkin without going all the way through, so that they have a glowing effect.

Step 6: Step 7: Stick a Candle in the Pumpkin and Admire Your Work!

There you go! Stick a candle in that pumpkin and watch the beautiful glow of your Lucky Cat-O-Lantern!
