Step 2 Preparing the picture

Tape the parchment paper on top of it.

Put some cooking spray or oil on a kitchen towel, and wipe the parchment paper with it to lightly grease it.

 can you use wax paper instead?

Absolutely. In fact, you may not even need the oil/cooking spray when you use wax paper, it would probably come off easily enough without it.
