Time to bust out the fans for the summer! And as we all know they are pretty bulky and ugly. So
why not give it a little sprucing up! Choose your weapon and lets get started! In this case I have a
box fan which seems to be the easiest to work with. And pretty ugly as can

Step 1: Take apart your fan

1 Prepare the box fan to be taken apart by turning off the fan and unplugging it from the outlet.
2 Unscrew each screw with the screwdriver. There should be about four to eight screws, depending on the brand and model of box fan. 3 Remember to put the screws in a safe place so you can put it back together
3 Remove the front plastic screen from the box fan's body and put it off to the side.
4 Place the box fan on its back. Lift the blades away from the fan's hub.

Step 2: Cleaning

To clean it I simply use dish soap, water and Ajax which is like a powdered
bleach. You can clean it  with other products too. Just about anything will
work. Just make sure to have your fan nice and clean because who wants to have
a dirty fan right? Plus cleaning will make your surface easier to work with.

Step 3: Chooshing Paint

When choosing the paint make sure it works for the type of fan you have. I recommend the Rust-Oleum Painters Touch indoor and outdoor paint because you only have to paint it once and it works for just about any material except (perhaps) plastic. No worries though!they have a special paint for plastic. Coincidentally its called Plastic! haha also from Rust-Oleum. But in my case they did not have the color I wanted so I got Plastic Primer which works like a base coat.
What a clever idea.... Why didn't I think of that? lol :-)

I did this this spring with a stand fan, but I painted a few stripes on the blades, looks like a whirling vortex when its on! :) Nice to "meet" everyone here.

Good idea. From what I can see of the finished product it looks good, but do you have a better picture of the painted fan? I'd love to see the entire thing.

Done! Just posted some pics and more tips. Hope it helps!
Wow, that's awesome looking, really turned out nice! I'm totally inspired to spruce up my ugly duckling fans and create some artwork.
Good job!

This is a great idea. Everyone I know has an ugly box fan somewhere in their life. I'd love to see your final product as the main image. Proselytize! Teach the masses that they don't have to tolerate a hideous fan.
