Christmas Tree Earrings.

Earrings are always a nice gift, especially if they are hand-made.

These earrings are ideal as Christmas gifts, but neutral enough to wear all year round.

Even better, once you've got the materials, they only take ten minutes or so to produce the finished pair.

Step 1: Materials and tools

DSCF6606.JPG
  • Silver-plated copper wire (I used 0.8mm thick wire, which is easily sourced at your favourite online auction website, but you could use any reasonably-soft metallic wire.  Just remember that non-coated copper can turn skin green).
  • Silver-plated "fish hook" ear wires (I also purchased these online.  Strangely, it proved far cheaper to buy a pack of five pairs than a single pair.  Hundreds were even cheaper.  You could use any ear-fixing you like, but I wanted the dangle effect).
  • Narrow-nosed pliers (I used my Leatherman, but specialist jewellery pliers are available quite cheaply).
  • A sharp pencil (If you're going to make lots of these, I would recommend sharpening a dowel, since the pencil "lead" can be snapped off quite easily).

Haha, that's awesome. I bet they would be even cooler with green and/or red colored wire. :D (Hm, that reminds me to replicate a pair of wire twist earrings I made, but of DNA rather than trees...)

Thanks!

I did think of coloured wire, but Kitewife wanted them to be subtle enough to wear out of season as well.

I sure do wish I'd found this site and "instructable" sooner.....lol! These are just too cute!
Kiteman (author) in reply to ralwineJan 7, 2012. 10:27 AM
Thank you - you could still make them, just don't call them "Christmas" trees.

Nice idea. A couple of observations:

Many wali-worlds sell colored wire. You can make the tree from green wire, and even add seed bead ornaments.
You can usually find both french hooks and clips on findings(hardware) there too.
Darice is a great source of craft wire. It has a corporate web site, Google it if you want.
The part that touches the ear needs to be "hypo-allergenic" the tree body is less important for this. A coat of clear fingernail polish can reduce "green ear" problems?

There is also a product the works like nail polish that is intended for this purpose exactly, but I can't remember the name of it at just this moment... :)

Thanks for the extra information.

Nice job. I had a similar idea, but I wanted to use polimer clay instead of wire. Never got the time to make them, instead I made some reindeer earings for my wife http://www.instructables.com/id/Handmade-Reindeer-earrings/...she loves them.

My wife loves them, thanks for the great instructions and idea!

I like how this is so simple and looks so cute!

They look good on as well, but Kitewife's too shy to model them online.

She also says they're comfy, and has been wearing them since I made them.

These are so cute! I am with Mrs K. I have never been good at speeches, pictures, or crowds. I can relate. Wished I had a model when I make stuff that needs worn. You should enter the bling contest next week. Find some micro bling to glue on the tree and maybe a miniature star? They are cute plain as well. Have you made any more? I am wondering what type. I personally don't wear them but I would make them for someone else. Is the wire very expensive? How difficult is it to bend? You guys have strength that women don't have. Birds would look so cute!

The wire and fishhooks came to less than £5 between them (good old ebay!), and that was for 5 pairs of hooks and six metres of wire.

The wire is easy to bend (it's mostly copper, after all), especially with pliers, it was just a fiddle to get it wrapped accurately around the pencil (it took four goes to make two earrings). I did discover a hole in my fingertip afterwards, but I worked out that I had cut the wire at an angel, making a point.

(Bling contest? What bling contest?)

My hubby was away last year and I had to fend fer meself when the kitchen faucet broke. I did fix it with his help talking me through it BUT I tweaked the pipe ! He mentioned yesterday that we needed to get it fixed this spring. I bought some wire to play with and it was too difficult to bend. That is why I was wondering. I thought it was copper but I could not bend it. I did not have a good pair of pliers though. the contest is not posted yet. It starts around Monday under scooch's weekly. You can read it on the comment section of the this weeks contest. Have a nice day! Sunshiine

I guess it depends how thick it is - this was 0.8mm, but you can get thinner, and real silver is softer than silver-plated copper.

Great instructable! I've made a pair for my wife and one for a friend she works with. I used green floral wire salvage from a flower arrangement and paper clips for the French hooks.
Kiteman (author) in reply to SelorianDec 11, 2011. 8:50 AM
I hope the paper clips are stainless steel?
Selorian in reply to KitemanDec 11, 2011. 9:32 AM
Yes, they are .041 stainless steel (standard #1 paperclip size).

Very nice earrings!

Maybe you could also make a note for people not to use nickel based metals either, because many people (including myself) are allergic, which I can tell you is NOT fun.

Great ible.

I think you just did!
jessyratfink says: Dec 10, 2011. 7:26 AM
Oh, so sweet! I bet they'd be cute with a little wire star on top too. :D
Kiteman (author) in reply to jessyratfinkDec 10, 2011. 7:28 AM
Probably, but then they wouldn't be so wearable "out of season".
