Coca Cola Chicken Wings

Coca Cola chicken is a surprisingly tasty, easy recipe for making a different style of wings.  A popular dish in China, the recipe for Coca Cola chicken is simple in its make up and closely resembles that of soy sauce chicken.  The addition of Coca Cola creates a sweet, caramel flavor, perfectly offset by fresh green onions.  I chose to use Sherry vinegar in this recipe, but Mirin or rice wine would create a more authentic finished dish.

Ingredients:
  • 2 pounds chicken wings, wings and drummettes separated
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Sherry vinegar
  • 3/4 cup Coca-Cola - I used the kind with real sugar
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Directions:
  1. Marinate the chicken wings in half the soy sauce for 15 minutes at room temperature, turning to coat both sides of wings.
  2. In a small bowl, combine remaining soy sauce, Coca Cola, and vinegar.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet.
  4. Sear chicken wings until browned - about 3 minutes on each side.
  5. Add soy-coke mixture and bring to a simmer.
  6. Simmer over very low heat, uncovered, until the sauce is reduced, about 25 minutes.

Serve chicken topped with sesame seeds and chopped green onion.

Enjoy!

Hi, I just have a quick question.
Are the cups in this recipe the english or the american cups?

Made them just now, every single one eaten and pot licked clean. The spring onion and sesame sprinkle is a great finishing touch. I added some garlic and ginger, and some copped rep pepper right at the end.

I don't eat chicken but this would be fun to try with tofu.
No it wouldn't.
Chicken wings only.
Why only chickens wings? I don't understand why anyone would care that I'm a vegetarian. It's not like me being a vegetarian affects you in anyway. I have never eaten meet and I never will!
I'll bet it would taste good with seitan too. Have you tried it? (sadly, seitan is not for people who can't have gluten)
I haven't tried seitan but have heard good things about. It's kind of like tofu but more firm right? Thanks for the suggestion!
Neither do I, But I will definitely share it! My friends will love it!
I'll bet any leftover chicken meat would be great in a wrap with some shredded carrot and mixed greens. Or in a rice wrap (like a spring roll, the kind that isn't fried) if you get sick of other tortillas for lunch during "wrap week." ;)
Oh Yea! Weekend appetizer menu! Thanks!

Looked online to see if there was a sub for the sherry vinegar since I do not have it.. Yep, http://www.foodsubs.com/Vinegars.html Looks like my rice vinegar will work. Hehe

Thanks Scoochmaroo! I second what someone else said, you always amaze me with your Instructables =D

For real? I'm excited! I hope you like it. It's really easy and tasty :D It sticks to the pan a bit while cooking, so don't get worried. :D
Thanks!!!! I will make it with "papas criollas" (Creole Potatoes: small and yellow potatoes from Colombia). DELICIOUS!!!!

My friend who was a Chef (and still thinks so) told me about this, except he put everything in a black bin-liner and left it in the fridge overnight.

I'm not sure about the necessity of a bin liner, but yes, marinating overnight would be even better :D
His food is good, but his methods are sometimes "untidy".

"Coke chicken" is a fine old boy scout campfire recipe. This is an interesting version. Looking forward to trying it out. Scooch... you never cease to amaze with your inventiveness on all fronts.
