Tinfoil really is a underrated material, as it can be used to signal, cook, collect water, etc. This is where tinfoil shines (literally), because it is so shiny, it can be used to signal as long as you use a piece that is flat and uncrinkled. It can also be folded into a box shape, and be used to cook. Also, sometimes the mouth of a water bottle cannot fit into a confined space where water may be flowing, this is where tinfoil comes in handy. Because you can flex tinfoil, you can create a funnel-like object to get the water, and you can even store water with it.

Unroll and rip off a few feet of tinfoil. Then fold it in half, and continue to fold it in half until you have a credit card sized piece of tinfoil. Try not to crinkle it when you do this

Aluminum foil isn't really the best signaling tool. It's not extremely reflective, expecially once packed and crumpled, and the silver/grey color can be mistaken for rock from above. I'd pack an emergency blanket (as mentioned on the first page) in lieu of the foil. It's kinda useless if you ask me: backpacking you'll have cooking equipment, grills can be fashioned anywhere there's wood for a fire if you don't have equpment... or just use a rock. Granted the funnel trick could work, but you could fashion a funnel out of duct tape. On the other hand, it's really light and doesn't take up much space, so whatever. I personally wouldn't bring it, but that's me.

This is a good kit to keep in your car, too. So I'd pack both the foil and the blanket. New blankets are very compact (and light) so it wouldn't take up much more room.

Meant to add that emergency blankets *should* have a gold side, which is the one that should be used for signaling. Could also fold the blanket and use it as a funnel.
