RAID is resilient, but not resilient enough to totally replace backups.  The usual test is "if I submerged your computer in concrete, could you get your data back?".

A backup should ideally be in a different building, but should at the very least be outside your computer case for when the burglars make off with it, it catches fire or gets hit by lightning.  My periodic photo/music backups are in a CD wallet under my bed- not great for anti-theft but won't be affected if my computer dies a death.
