Compost Bins

We've got Instructables on compost bins, compost barrels, compost sifters, compost turners, and straight up how to compost - pretty much everything you need to digest the worlds natural garbage and turn it into black gold. So sweep those leaves, peal that orange, and gather those apple cores, we're composting my friends, and we're doing it at Instructables.

I looked at a video on youtube when the tested a bunch of bins. One thing that I noticed is that black bins did better (Cos i guess they get hotter) even when the rest of the design was nearly exactly the same. If I had more space, I would make the "ultimate compost bin" with a solar cooker on top to steralize the material going into it. I put everything in. Almost nothing from my place goes to the dump. I saw an article on mother earth news by their compost lady and cooks up her seedy weeds and diseased plants in a box cooker before putting them in the bin!

we have always composted. But just to show a sceptical, friend I began to place all organic waste in a large plastic compost bin which I got from my local council. I never turned it..because my sceptic friend said it was too much like hard work, but no matter how much I put in it (and it was a lot) never managed to fill it. If it became too wet I dumped a load of shredded paper onto it and just carried on....after two years he was convinced! The top six inches were used to start a 'New Bin' and I was left with a large mound of black gold!!!

Sweet! Once I tried composting but at midnight this animal creeps into our backyard and eats all the scraps and poops everywhere. I tried a sealed bin but when the compost was ready I open the lid and the smell nearly knocked me out.
