Computer Recycling and Repurposing

Computers contain so many useful parts and components that can be recycled, reused and re-purposed, that it's a shame to simply throw them away. PC fans make great air filters, mother boards can become jewelry, hard drive platters beautifully turn into clocks and power supplies, and cd drives magically become home made secret safes and roulette wheels! So, think long and hard next time you find yourself thinking about throwing away a computer, and instead, take it apart and make one of the amazing projects below.

Well, when you typed something on your keyboard, you moved your fingers. The moving fingers are full of kinetic energy. The easiest way to make kinetic energy is from potential energy. Lift something into the air, and it gets potential energy. Drop it and it is turned into kinetic energy.

Another way to get kinetic energy is through chemical means. Inside our bodies is a perfect conversion of chemical energy to kinetic energy, they are called mitochondria. What you should do is eat something with glucose in it and wait about 5 minutes. in this time enzymes break down your food and glucose molecules go to the mitochondria where it is further processed into chemical energy.

Then get up. Getting up turns the chemical energy into electrical energy which is run from your brain to your nerves, which then cause your muscles to contract and relax in ways that cause you to move. Moving is kinetic energy.

If you want a serious answer, kinetic energy is the energy of moving things. Anything that moves has kinetic energy. I suggest looking up some simple "Intro to Physics" by googling the subject.

All you need is a DC motor hooked up to your (rotary) KE source. There's not any point, though, unless it's purely for show, as all your doing is converting your electrical energy to KE, losing some energy via heat, then converting the KE back into electrical energy...

Computers over five years old or clearly beyond repair should be recycled. However even reputable recyclers are often not an ideal option. Old computers are often shipped overseas to be mined for resources, often in developing nations such as India, Nigeria and China where workers including children dismantle electronics under dangerous conditions. Interesting how the banner is no longer orange. Some neat ideas in this guide, keep up the good work!

We didtched our orange banner on pages that have our new apple ad campaign running on them. Computer pages and green pages I believe.

Hey noahw. I really think that the new apple ads should be toned down a little bit. The way the animations go off of the ad and on the screen don't help at all. The links above the apple ad sometimes don't work now... It seems like it happens about ten seconds before the page-flip thing about the battery happens... I like having the apple ad there, but I think it would be better if the animations were restricted to the ad space itself.

Just to remind you, that its adverts like that. From the big brands, that help to pay for this website and keep it free.

I know it can be a pain, but you would hate it if ibles started charging a 'subscription fee'

Or even worse, fail.

You all seem to be missing the point of how great it is that apple (the biggest seller of consumer computers) is advertising on this site!

that would actually be HP buddy

The only reason Apple is the "biggest seller of consumer computers" is that they have some cool features. Apple's more of an arts computer. They're only useful to people who do things like photogrophy, filming, and recording. Windows is better in every other way. Windows is user-friendly, simple to use, and great for buisnesses. Apple is here today only because of the iPod, which is also a rip-off. Sure, it has a ton of memory, but you can download songs only from iTunes. Apple was about to go bankrupt before the iPod. P.S. THE IPAD IS JUST A BIG IPOD TOUCH!!!!

I've used both Macs and other PCs for design (I'm a graphic designer) and I find Windows in general a better choice. For one, you do have a better variety of software to choose from if you don't want to use ADOBE products. I also replace my RAM and processors to fit what task I'm doing. I don't find it economical to buy a new computer every time I upgrade my software and find out it's too demanding on my hardware. Macs are or used to be difficult to upgrade since not all parts you buy work well with Mac motherboards. To get the most out of your money, which I want to do since I freelance and do a lot of arts projects, I need my machine and my OS to give me the best performance they can. I also don't see the sense in rendering video on a laptop. Laptops in general cannot perform as well as a top of the line tower because they are built for mobility, not performance. You also can run any piece of hardware on a Windows machine and not have to worry about Mac drivers. Not all companies make both drivers or two versions of software due to cost. Macs are alright if you don't want to think about how your computer works or if you think you might accidentally break your OS.

lol
  1. windows is the least user-friendly thing on the planet
  2. some people want a big ipod touch...
  3. you can add any MP3's to itunes
  4. Apples run all the word, excel, power point applications so it can do everything windows can

You lie like a rug! Windows is very user-friendly and easy to use. They also support an open-source software so you can download third party applications. Macs can, but you need to have Windows. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a Mac, it just needs Windows. However, I agree the iPad is pretty cool, but it is just too expensive for my liking and it's made by Apple.

What? I can't give my honest opinion without being attacked digitally? Does "Please be positive or constructive with your comments or risk being banned from our site." ring any bells?
Jun 16, 2010. 6:17 AMgmjhowe says:
Ha. Hypocrite. That's the whole reason I picked out your comment as trolling. When your comment below that starts with 'You lie like a rug!' It is obvious you are in no way following the 'Be nice policy' Even more so, Smarts reply filled the criteria perfectly. You replied to an old comment purely to try and stir up an argument, and you are annoyed because I did not respond how you wanted. You can reply, but I will just ignore the comment, because your replies are in no way constructive, and I would rather go make some useful comments about peoples projects.
Jun 16, 2010. 6:42 AMSaturn V says:
Also, the comment where you said I was trolling, that also fit the criteria. You didn't reply to the 'lie like a rug' one, only the one where I was pointing some things out.
Jun 16, 2010. 6:40 AMSaturn V says:
No, I didn't want to stir up an argument. I get enough of those with my brother. I just wanted to point out that Microsoft isnt evil like a lot of people think, and that they are good. And the "You lie like a rug!" comment was just for an amusing little pun. No need to get angry about me making a point. I have an idea! How 'bout we agree to disagree and leave it at that?
Jun 17, 2010. 3:49 PM=SMART= says:
"you lie like a rug" is pretty funny haha, i might use that in future :P
