Hey its me, Hiyadudez! I made this instructables for the Keyboard Vs. Mouse Speed Challenge.

Basically, I was thinking and thinking of what I could make for the contest, but just couldnt think of anything. When suddenly, for some reason, my Knex USB came to mind, and there was my idea. Cool story, eh?

My instructions may vary a tiny bit for you as you most likely dont have the same mouse or flash drive as me, but its a basic concept of how they go together, so don't worry.

This is the list of all the materials and equipment you need.

Materials:
  • A computer mouse (preferably a small one)
  • A USB/Flash drive (Any size as long as its not longer than your mouse)

Tools:

  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks
  • Wire cutting pliers or just a knife
  • A craft knife (optional, its to open the USB case, any knife will do)
  • Dremel or a file (a file will be much quicker and cleaner)
  • A screwdriver
Got all of those things? Great, then lets move on to the first

In this step we will take the mouse and USB out of the casing. Follow the steps and pictures.
  1. Get a screwdriver and remove all of the neccecary screws.
  2. This is what the inside of mine looks like.
  3. Take out the circuit board (mine had a scroll wheel so I needed to keep it to put it back into the hole)
  4. Throw the circuit board and wire in the bin because you dont need it (or keep it for future projects)
  5. This is what my USB looks like.
  6. I removed the metal casing.
  7. Get your knife and slide it inside of the casing, and pry it apart.
  8. You should be left with a small un-cased USB.
  9. This was the size of my USB.

Amazing!!!!!!!!!
You should rig it to make the scrolly thing make the flashdrive retract and go forward.
That would be legit man.

Looking at just the title I was thinking "USB what?", charger? hub? adapter? nuclear reactor?

Thumb drive? That's an awful big thumb to be hanging off a USB port. That extra size and weight puts a lot of leverage on the connector.

This takes the phrase "USB Mouse" to a whole new level. 5*
I'd change the title in Computer-mouse USB stick that makes it clearer because I thought you converted an usb mouse into a wireless mouse ;D Great instructable though I'd have the USB stick sticking out the front ;) But great work :D

Cool idea! But wouldn't it be a bit heavy?
Hiyadudez (author)  Shadowman393 years ago
Thanks. But nope, like I said I chose a small mouse, and since all the circuitry has been removed, it's just the really light casing.
I might try it sometime if my mouse breaks (or if I make it break... hehe).
