Introduction: Concrete Night Lamp

About: Hello people I'm of student Architecture and hobbyist. I love to explore new materials.

Hello everyone,

I'm here with my new instructable! which is a concrete casted lamp. Basically the idea and inspiration for making this was one of my exercise in one of my subject in college. I love creating illusions from light so i tried this as well. this product we are going to cast in two parts, upper and lower. I had lots of fun casting it and hope it will be yours experience too. so let's make it.

Step 1: MATERIALS AND THINGS WE NEED

Here we need things for mould and other things for use in for lamp

1. Styrofoam bowls- 2 piece

2. Oil

3. Glue gun & Glue stick

4. Fairy lights (optional)

5. Cement

6. Sand

7. Recron fibers

Step 2: MOULD MAKING

Here 1st we'll apply oil on inner surface which helps cement not to stick to the styrofoam bowl.

Then we'll take glass and apply glue gun on it's upward part's circular edge and then stick the circular edge which is glued on to styrofoam bowl.

Note: Reason to stick the glass is that when we pour cement into bowl the cement should not go into the glass.

Step 3: MIXTURE FOR THE PRODUCT

In this part we'll make mixture the cement, sand & recron fibres.

Cement and sand ratio is 1:2.

This mean we'll take 1 part cement and 2 part sand in proportion in it & then mix the recron fibres in it.

Now add water in this dry mixture to make mortar. (keep in mind that don't pour water so much in 1 time pour slowly while mixing mortar should not become slurry or not so less water in it otherwise it won't bond mixture.

Note: Recron fibres (also known as construction fibres) are using to make bond strong in cement. You can use only fibres also in place of sand for get finished product. Adding sand into mixture give rough texture to the product but it also give strength to it.

Step 4: POURING THE MOULD

Now when the mixture is ready pour it into bowl and fill it till the edge of bowl.

Tap onto side of bowl to settle the mixture properly also this will help to come bubbles out of the mixture which create problem in bonding of mixture.

Once the mixture is settle in bowl keep it aside for 12-15 hours for bonding of mixture with glass.

Step 5: POURING UPWARD PART AND LETTING IT DRY

After 12-15 hours you can see that the cement stick to the glass and it'll look like as shown in images.

Now repeat the same process for making the mixture.

Use the bowl with applied oil in it's inner surface and put the glass downward where we'll make another part of lamp.

Do not keep whole glass into the bowl for that use support like this sticks (you can use anything like this for support.)

keep it aside again for 12-15 hours.

Step 6: COMPLETE PRODUCT WITH LIGHT EFFECT

Here You can see the complete product with it's usages. you can use bulb or fairy lights to create more illusions. i would suggest you to use orange bulb if you are using bulb.

Thank you so much.
