Introduction: Construct a Dodecahedron in Rhino 3D

This tutorial will teach you how to construct a dodecahedron in Rhinoceros 3D.

Step 1: Step 1: Open New File in Rhino 3D

In Rhino 3D, go to File > New

In the "Open Template File" window, select "Small Objects- Millimeters"

Step 2: Step 2:

Type Polygon into the Command Line

Type "5" into the NumSides=5

Step 3:

Click in the "Top" View to indicate the center of the polygon. Then click again to indicate the corner of the polygon.

Step 4:

Select pentagon. Type PlanarSrf in Command Line. The curve is now a surface.

Step 5:

Select Surface.

Copy and Paste surface. (Two surfaces are now in the same position).

Making sure only one surface is selected, type "Rotate3D" into the Command Line.

Click one corner of the pentagon for the "Start of the Rotation Axis".

Click adjacent corner for the "End of Rotation Axis". Think of this edge like a hinge that the surface will angle from.

Type 116.565 for "Angle or First Reference Point".

Continue to follow these steps until 6 sides of the form have been made.

Step 6:

Select the bottom half of the shape and type "Mirror" into command bar.

In the "Front" Window, select the uppermost point for "Start of Mirror Plane", then click the furthest uppermost point for "End of mirror plane".

Step 7:

Type "Orient3pt" in the Command line.

Select the top half of the shape. Press enter.

For "Reference Point 1" click the corresponding point on the top half of the dodecahedron

For "Reference Point 2" click the corresponding point on the top half of the dodecahedron

For "Reference Point 3" click the corresponding point on the top half of the dodecahedron

For "Target Point 1" click the corresponding point on the lower half of the dodecahedron

For "Target Point 2" click the corresponding point on the lower half of the dodecahedron

For "Target Point 3" click the corresponding point on the lower half of the dodecahedron

Step 8:

Go to "Edit" > "Select" > "Surfaces"

Type "Join" in command line
