Introduction: Convert Your Pringles Cans to RTTTL Audio Player

hello everyone , in this tutorial I will show you how to build a RTTTL player ,and I will show you how to do that using Teensy 3.1 .

You can expand the number of the songs you want to add , and will show you how to do that later and give you a resources for more than 10K files.

first , let's talk a look for what we need :

  1. Teensy 3.1 MCU board.
  2. 8 ohm speaker
  3. Nokia 5110 PCD8544 LCD
  4. Button * 2 pcs
  5. potentiometer
  6. jumpers(female-male and male-male)
  7. resistor 2.2K
  8. mini breadboard
  9. DC power jack 2.1mm.
  10. drill.
  11. Something to hold everything inside , I used Pringles can as the only choice I had

Step 1: Second : Let's Take a Look at Teensy

The Teensy is a complete USB-based microcontroller development system, in a very small footprint, and run on a 32 bit ARM M4 MCU , and can run on a frequency up to 96MHz.

the size of the Flash Memory is 256K , 64K of RAM and 34 GPIO , that's make it the best choice for such a project, I will add more audio files and draw more complex GUI later "and you can do as well"

if you didn't use it before , you can take a look to see the specification of the board and fromhereto see how to program it using arduino IDE.

Step 2: Prepare Your Hardware

First , You need to allocate where you want to put the LCD , Speaker , Button and potentiometer , since it will be shown outside , I started with the Speaker Hole , and as you can see i opened 2 holes because i tried to add 2 speakers to the device , but i missed the other Speaker .

Then on the side , I opened a hole to the LCD , just to be smaller compared to the LCD , and as you can see it's ugly , but it works.

then I prepared the Buttons , I soldered them, then I drilled a hole suitable to the button's dimension "install it from inside" , I used the hot silicon to stick it.

the potentiometer will control the LCD back-light , I used a value of 5K ohm potentiometer, and I installed it behind the LCD.

and the final photo will show you how it will look likes , yes not pretty but it works fine for me

Step 3: Test the Speaker ... With RTTTL Library

it's good to test everything before install it , I tested the Speaker using RTTTL library code , you can download it from the attachment below.

For protection , I recommend you to use amplifier , since Teensy can't provide you enough current to power the Speaker.

I used the Amplifier module LM386, and the schematic shows how to connect the speaker to the amplifier module and to pin8 on teensy

Step 4: Test the LCD ... Without Library !

For the LCD , you can use Adafruit GFX library to control this LCD , but i went with an old code I have without a library , here the connection for this LCD , please be careful to the LCD power supply , use external Source to power the LCD, I connect it here to Vin pin which can give you 5V from USB .

Step 5: Connect the Buttons and LEDs

for the buttons , I connect one to pin 19 and the other to pin 20 , for the LED , be careful to select a suitable resistor to not damage the teensy board , i selected 2.2K ohm .

No need for pull-up resistor with the buttons , I activated them on the software.

well the final shape is not that perfect , but it works , so you need to connect everything correctly because any mistake might be fatal !

third : you need to change the value of MaxSong variable "on line 46" depend on the number of melodies you have .

Fourth: go to void updateSongScreen(int counter) function (Line 407) and add a new if condition, like this

if(counter==15)
{ LcdString("Fun 015"); }

this will update the name of the song each time you scroll "change" the track.

Fifth: add the name of the song and play the melody , go to void updateSong(int counter) (line 470) and add your melody like this:

if(counter==15)
{ LcdString("Indiana 015"); player.play_P(Fun, octave); }

hope with this simple instruction you will be able to add any melody you want
