Here's a video of us driving the finished Honda Accord around West Oakland. No shots were fired. Fire was kept only in the gasifier. And everyone made it home with smiles on their faces.

Great Scott!
this screams zombie apocalypse. in a world where gas stations are empty, you can dispose of corpses and get 20 mpg doing it

Very interesting and exiting project. But I think it is not legal to drive it on public roads. Every part on the car has to be DOT approved ( department of transportation ). Messing with and/ or disabling part or whole of the emission control system that a car came out with is a federal crime. Then what about inspection? You better check with your state and federal laws before you do it. Laws changed a lot the last 70 years. I am all for it and considered to build a gasifier for a back-up generator, but I just don't like folks to convert there cars over and then they have to find out that there time, money and car they spend was for nothing and that all of it may end up in a junk yard.

I seriously doubt the author is worried about this.

so installing an aftermarket exhaust is a federal crime... sure.
Jul 27, 2010. 5:54 PMshortw says:
Don't mislead readers with a comment like this. What is a aftermarket product? ( in your case a exhaust ) A aftermarket product is not endorsed, manufactured or sold by a car manufacture. A aftermarket product may or may not be an exact copy of the original. If a car manufacture still has a patent on it, which I believe is for 7 years, then the aftermarket product has to be 10% different ( size, thickness, material, shape etc.. ) . After 7 years if the patent defaulted, anyone can make an exact copy of it. And most aftermarket products for cars are still DOT approved and are legal to use. Of course there are some exceptions, but then it is usually sold as ' off-road use only' or it will state ' not DOT approved ' , or it was bought straight from China or Asia as a counterfeit. Aftermarket products will not have a car manufacture logo ( trademark ) on it.

I read somewhere that there is a section of the brain directly responsible for detecting sarcasm. The article went on to say that it is even possible for a person to not have this section of the brain, or have it and it be underdeveloped thereby causing the INABILITY to detect sarcasm. Dead serious.

I would have never believed it until I read this comment.

my friend, the sarcasm was detected and resented, because he is desagreeing with the previous poster. shortw has a point. aftermarket is nothing like what these guys are doing, and compairing the two IS misleading.

the diference here is that aftermarket does NOT mean DIY.
i would wager that almost all aftermarket parts are dot approved.

however, in disagreement with shortw, this does nothing to the exhaust system. it doesn't touch it. it only changes the fuel used. in theory the exhaust would still work exactly the same.
people have been converting their cars over to natural gas and other fuels for a long time, and there is probably a process to follow. just search around.

About the dot thing. Putting a tree air fresheners in your car make it illegal to drive. Lmao
Jul 25, 2010. 11:34 AMy2kkmac says:
I think this is more modifying a fuel supply than the emissions. Theoretically, you can take any natural gas vehicle, remove the tank, plug in a gasifier, and not have to touch anything else.
Jan 25, 2011. 6:27 AMskaar says:
which is perfectly legal, as it's legal to take a gasoline car and convert to propane or natgas. the only thing with that, is that the tanks have to follow the pressure vessel laws. there may be some laws that apply to gassifiers, but not the kind that would prevent someone from converting to woodgas.

the dot is concerned with devices that make the vehicle unsafe, which means, it's probably illegal to put the fuel delivery hose... on the bottom, but it also can't be big enough to block vision when it goes down the a pillar, from the roof.

Not west Oakland. How many pounds/mile?
Jan 11, 2009. 1:56 PMosp001 says:
Great project. Very nicely detailed. Gas weighs about 6 pounds per gallon; while solid fuels are obviously very different from liquid hydrocarbons, on a weight basis you're looking at the gasoline equivalent of 3-6 miles/gallon.

Any way to make this fit in the trunk with maybe a valve or pipe out through the trunk lid ?? Most cities probably wouldn't allow this because of possible exposed areas to heat and blocking the back window
Apr 11, 2009. 10:42 PMFunk_D says:
You could just put this system in a van or truck instead of a car Just pipe the exhaust pipe you wanna put through the trunk lid down through the floor of the van/bed of the truck and connect it to the existing exhaust system. that way, no one would be concerned about the heat exposure. ...I think.
Jul 11, 2010. 11:40 AMshortw says:
And kill yourself doing so!
May 7, 2009. 10:55 AMzwheel says:
you would be pushing the hot exhaust down... I think the engine exhaust would be forced into the gassifier rather than both gasses forced out the back. You could always have a second tailpipe going up like on a big truck or tractor.
