Step 1: Getting started

Here's the materials you'll need, it's a pretty short list;

1) A 2 piece plastic skin or shell for the model of phone that you have (unless you choose to case mod the actual phone), mine ran me ~$10.00
2) Spray Paint - (1) can of flat black and (1) can of gold
3) Steel wool or fine (600) grit sandpaper
4) a 3/32" drill bit*
5) 3/8" power drill*

*Optional, only needed if you intend to drill the flip cover shell for that added touch.

Does it do that sound?

The RAZR no, but the replica of the prototype Communicator does make the characteristic chirps when you flip open the antenna grill.

This is awesome. I had a similar idea but went about it a more lazy way. I made a picture of the gold grid, then used it to make a custom sticker skin at a site that does that. a few days later my custom sticker skin arrived in the mail and worked perfectly. It's not as cool as yours but it looks alright.

How's the paint holding up? Spray paint doesn't typically stick to plastic. However, I've seen some paint at the hardware store specifically designed for bonding to plastic. Nice job... love the communicator. I've used TNG communicator alert tones, as well as TOS communicator chirping on my Chocolate for incoming text messages, and the intercom ship's whistle for my ringtone.

It has had some wear, I'd much rather have the part that cover the body of the phone made of molded black plastic and have an actual brass "grill" to cover the "lid". Maybe a future instructable.

Now if only the RAZR had automatic speaker phone, it would be in true Star Trek spirit!

well you can press that button on the top left when its open and it will make it on speakerphone, until you turn it off. keep in mind it has to be open to do it.
