Pac-Man and his ghosts!  This started as a project to just crochet Pac-Man.  Then this expanded to making the ghosts, then to making the ghosts with movable eyes, and lastly to adding in covers to make the ghosts switch to dark blue.  I am most pleased with how the ghosts turned out.  Hope you enjoy!

Pac-Man is really simple.  The main body is Yellow and his mouth is Black.

Body: (in Yellow)
  1. Magic Ring 5, ch 1, turn (I tried to do this with just chaining 2 and then crocheting 5 sc. into the second st. from the end, but this caused a big hole to show so I think a magic ring works better because it makes the stitches tighter)
  2. Skip first st., Inc across (10) ch. 1, turn
  3. Skip first st., [Sc. in next st., inc. in next] Repeat (15) ch. 1, turn
  4. Skip first st., [Sc. in next 2 sts., inc. in next] Repeat (20) ch. 1, turn
  5. Skip first st., [Sc. in next 3 sts., inc. in next] Repeat (25) ch. 1, turn
  6. Skip first st., [Sc. in next 4 sts., inc. in next] Repeat (30) ch. 1, turn
  7. Skip first st., [Sc. in next 5 sts., inc. in next] Repeat (35) ch. 1, turn
  8. Skip first st., [Sc. in next 6 sts., inc. in next] Repeat (40) ch. 1, turn
  9. Skip first st., [Sc. in next 7 sts., inc. in next] Repeat (45) ch. 1, turn (It might help later to keep a marker here)

  19. Skip first st., [sc. in next 6 sts., dec.] Repeat (35) ch. 1, turn
  20. Skip first st., [sc. in next 5 sts., dec.] Repeat (30) ch. 1, turn

You will have to decide how long the mouth piece needs to be based on how big your Pac-Man's body ends up being.

To attach the mouth on the body, start at one corner of the black piece and one corner of Pac Man's mouth.  I single crocheted around with yellow yarn.  If you marked where you stopped increasing and started decreasing you should be able to match up the corners of the black piece easily to the corners of his mouth.  To make it easier and make sure the piece attaches evenly, use paperclips to hold the mouth to his body.  It will look like he has many lip piercings.

I put in some stuffing when I started to make it easier to grab him and then finished stuffing him before I finished crocheting him up.

Hello, in row 18 of the ghost I don't understand " inc. dec.". First I thought that it was increase and decrease, but if I do that, at the end of the row I can't complete the "cycle" ( i mean: sl. st.,sc., inc. dec., inc. dec., sc. , sl. st.) and I stil have 36 stitches.

What do I do?

MamaBell061 month ago
I want to make this for my son. I taught myself to crochet(partially from memory and some ypu tune to refresh) at the beginning of 2014. I made my kids halloween costumes and just made my daughter a new vday dress. My queation is do you think iy would be too hard for me to make the ghosts "reversible" instead of the blue cover???? Like make the bottomof the ghosts blue to be the head instead of matching the ghosts original colors......
Penolopy Bulnick (author)  MamaBell061 month ago

I think you could make them reversable, but then you wouldn't be able to stuff them, so it would be more of a shell of a ghost. I think it could work, you would probably make a ghost of each color and then sew them together, but I would have to try it myself to see if it would work. If you try it out, you should comment again and let us know how it went!

***some you tube to refresh**** my mom had taught me when i was about 8, how to do a simple single crochet, so i just went from there.

The inc stitch is where you put 2 sc in one sc right? Also is step 19 the one that ruffles/scallops the edges?

Penolopy Bulnick (author)  PsychoticHatter7 months ago

Yes, 2 sc in one sc increases.

Step 18 and 19 both make the ruffle/scallop edge :)

Thank you!

Penolopy Bulnick (author)  Hulk50510 months ago

Thank you :) I'm thinking of doing another version of pac-man!

I can't print the pattern. What I'm I doing Wrong?

Penolopy Bulnick (author)  char7111 months ago

Only Pro members can download the PDF, but the pattern is all right there and you can copy and paste it if you are interested in printing it off.

I have a question: I followed your instructions but I keep getting just a half moon instead of the iconic pac-man. What am I doing wrong??? Please help!

Hmmm, I think maybe your yarn is smaller or your hook is. It looks like your stitches are much smaller than mine. I would say you should start it like my pattern, with the circle, and then with the first row after that, just go until you get the right initial shape. You might need to increase by another stitch and do 3 stitches in each one for that first row (after the magic ring) and see how that goes.

My daughter would LOVE to have these but doesn't know how to crochet. I can get her going, but she wants to know how to change pattern to create the ghosts too???
Penolopy Bulnick (author)  cheshire541 year ago
Yeah, I have the pattern for the ghosts in there too! Make sure you click view all at the top of the page and you can see all the steps. I show how to make the ghosts in Step 2 and the Blue Ghosts cover in Step 4 :)

I've almost finished Pac Man! I can't wait to give the finished project to my brother for Christmas. :D
Your instructions are so easy to follow! This is the first crochet design I've been able to work from. Thank you!
Penolopy Bulnick (author)  Manderson10912 years ago
That's awesome! I'd love to see how it turns out! It's nice to know my directions aren't too hard to follow :) Be sure to let me know if you run into anything that doesn't make sense!

love it so wish I could crotchet.
Penolopy Bulnick (author)  navyfamily42 years ago
Thank you! It's not too hard. When I first started trying to crochet I just used one of those teach yourself to crochet books, and just keep doing it over and over again. And to learn the magic ring, which I can do better than normal straight crocheting, I actually watched this video :)

Good Luck :)

It's not too hard. I tried to write it out how I think others are written out. Let me know if there is something I can do to make it more clear!
