Picture of Crocheted Dragon Eating Ice Cream
dragon3.jpg
There is no pattern for this sculpture.  I thought about what I wanted to make and then I made it.  It's about 14" tall.

He is LOVELY!!! I crochet as well, and I do it the same way you do: I get a vision and see what comes up as I go along. But I make clothes and hats. I never thought about doing "sculptural" crochet, though I have wanted to make a dragon (or fairy) for quite some time. Did you use a special wire or just standard wire? And what gauge? Thanks so much for sharing!!!!
You said you would make anything if asked...
I WANT A FAIRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the Gods that is awesome!! My BFF loves dragons but I dont think I have the patients to do something like this. But it is cool non the less. What made you pair it with an ice cream though? I would have never thought dragon and ice cream. lol Great job!

Would love some more close ups and different angles to attempt to figure out how you made this guy. It's hard to tell with just the two pictures. Thanks.

Looks great but I thought you needed to have instructions to be an instructable? This would be a challenge for even an experienced craftsperson.

I expected this might come up.  Per the guidelines, slideshow submissions were acceptable for the contest.  My thinking here is that people who want to one day make something like this just need to learn how to crochet.  The whole piece is made from simple crochet stitches and easy shaping techniques.  All things you can learn how to do via other instructables.  Also, this is my artwork.  I am an artist and crochet is my medium.  I present this here as inspiration, to show what can be done with just a little yarn and a few simple skills.  If a person wants to crochet this dragon, I don't mind.  I'm just not going to lead them there step by step.
I don't blame you! Besides I'm sure the pattern would be so long and complicated not many people would be able to make it. No one would be able to make it so smooth and perfect. I've seen alot of the crochet animals (agumari I don't know how to spell it) but non that looks so smooth and even! Absolutely Gorgeous!

love it. I'm currently working on a dragon of my own, only mine is knitted (I can't crochet) I've just discovered I can make up patterns as I go along which is something I never thought I'd be able to do.. but then when you think of all the patterns out there, someone must have created them :-)

Yeah, this is a great piece of work. Still, what is so "instructable" about it? What's the point of just posting items you made and offering no instructions in your "instructable"? I'm a crocheter, and looking for items to make on the yarn section. I don't have a snowball's chance in *ell of figuring this out without some instruction....

Great job on this dragon! So impressed by how well it's proportioned--and that it stands up on its own! :)
I agree, the standing up is awesome!

knittingkneedle - did you use anything to reinforce your dragon?
knittingkneedle (author)  canida4 years ago
Yes, there is a very simple wire armature inside the dragon.

He's absolutely adorable!

I know you didn't keep track for a pattern, but if you could add a couple of additional angle and close-up photos maybe some of us with less crochet skill can try to follow your example.  Please do - 'd love to try this critter!

this 2 best things in the world: dragons and ice cream. could u give me a pattern?
knittingkneedle (author)  PetBennett4 years ago
Unfortunately, there is no pattern at this time.  I've been crocheting for so long, I just kind of know what to do and when to do it.
OMG! Your dragon is great!!
