Crushed Can experiment!

This is a cool experiment that i demonstrated to my classmates : what happens is that ...........................

A small amount of water is heated in a soda can until steaming. The can is then quickly put in cool water, mouth side down. The sudden change in temp causes a sudden change in pressure, making atmospheric pressure higher than the can pressure. Thus, the can collapses under the pressure.


Materials:

1. Any soda can
2. oven or Bunsen burner
3. beaker ( 250 ml - 500 ml)
4. room temperature
5. tongs

Step 1: Getting started!

first get your beaker and fill it all the way to the top ( see first picture) - a glass cup could work too!

Then fill ur can with enough water to fill the bottom ( see second picture)

The whole point of this experiment is that it shows how condensing steam causes a vacuum and the can is crushed by atmospheric pressure. This shows how the first steam engines worked.

Why do you have to type it "you" instead of "u"? No one really cares, as long as they understand it. But don't get me wrong. I will try my best to follow the policy.

The point is two-fold;

• If you care enough to post the project, you should show you care by putting the effort in to present it properly. If you don't care, don't post.
• We have a lot of international members and readers who do not speak or read English as well as you or I, if at all. We need to make our writing as clear and correct as possible so that they can understand it in translation (especially if they are using something like Babelfish).
