Introduction: Custom Sunglasses (Inspired by Casey Neistat)

About: Designer, Maker, CNC Enthusiast, Audio Lover

Hi there!

So If you have ever seen Casey Neistat's videos you will know he wears very distinctive sun glasses.

Simply put, I think they are awsome... So I decided to do my own spin on his Idea!

Check out the video above for the build process.

Step 1: Materials

For this project you will need:

1. A pair of sun glasses, preferably the 'Ray Ban' style

2. Masking tape

3. Grey/ white primer (your choice of colour really)

4. a sharp knife

Step 2: Mask Off the Lenses

Mask of the lenses with the tape and make sure to do the other side of each lens!

Step 3: Cut Around the Edge of the Lens

Take your sharp knife or razor blade and cut around the inside edge of the lens being careful not to press to hard as you will noticeably scratch the lens! just be careful and stick close to the edge of the lens so that the faint scratch (if one appears) won't be very noticeable!

Step 4: Paint It!

Now here you have a few options as to what style you want. I wanted a kind of smooth finish which I could scratch away at later but if (like Casey) you want a build up of paint around the edges of the lenses then you need to spray a lot of paint on to the lenses so it seeps around the sides. If you want it to look like my glasses then short sharp squirts of the paint can achieve a nice smooth finish.

Step 5: Let the Paint Dry, Scratch Up the Frames and Then Remove the Tape

Wait a couple of minutes for the primer to dry. primer usually doesn't take too long to dry but be patient. Then, take a piece of plastic that is fairly rigid (like the quadcopter prop I used) and scratch up the surface and scrape away the paint as you desire to achieve the look you want. If you are going for the paint around the lenses look (like Caseys's glasses) then scrape most of the paint off the frame and leave the paint around the lenses. For mine, I scraped random patterns of the paint off to achieve a desired look.

I then used a coat of clear, matt, lacquer to cover the whole pair of glasses to protect the paint a bit. Then remove the tape from the lenses and voila! A custom pair of awesome sunglasses!
