I first get an idea of what the client likes, we do sketch's and discuss what they have in mind, I see what gems or diamonds they have to work with.
In this project the diamonds came from older jewelry given to the couple from her Grandmother. I remove the diamonds from the older setting and carefully measure them for size and carat weight. The millimeter measurements are the most important to me at this time. as well as finger sizes, which are also carefully measured.
In the past these types of design would be hand carved from a block of jewelers carving wax. This is still possible, however these days I also use the latest in Cad Cam technology to create a wax model of the design. You can see the detail on the side of the shank would be impossible to hand carve into the wax pattern. This also produces a photo realistic rendering of the design for the client to approve before making the wax pattern. This wax pattern is produce by taking the cad model to a CNC4 axis mill which will carve out the model exactly as shown in the rendering.
In this case they also see images of the wax model and approve the design once more before it is cast in white gold. In the images you can see the flask which holds the wax pattern is burnout or pretty much disintegrated in order to make a void which is filled with molten metal , this casting is done in 14k white gold. From this point the casting is hand finished and all the diamond are hand set. And then delivered to the happy couple.
