Make quick work of the garnishes for your next cocktail party! This is how professional bartenders prepare the lemons and limes for your favourite bar rail drinks.

Step 1: You'll Need

Picture of You'll Need

Gather your materials. You'll need:

  • cutting board
  • sharp pairing knife
  • limes or lemons (washed)

Step 2: Trim the Ends

Cut the ends off the lime and discard.

Step 3: Cut Lengthwise

Cut the lime in half lengthwise.

Step 4: Spilt the Center

Cut down the center of each half part way. This split will let you rest the lime on the edge of a glass.

Step 5: Slice

Cut each lime half into thin slices. You're done!

Put the slices in a bowl where they will be close at hand while you are mixing drinks.

Like any good bartender, make sure you do this prep work before your guests arrive. Fresh is always better, but if you won't have time right before your party, cut the limes in advance and store them in an airtight container in the fridge.

A home party, sure this is fine, but dining out, we forgo a slice of lemon in our water- you wouldn't believe how many different wait staff hands dip into the uncovered slice bowl to grab a piece for your water, worse yet you don't wanna know just where those hands have been lately either. ☺

I imagine it can't be much worse than everything else they are serving you (cutlery, glassware, the food you order... someone touches it all). Hopefully they are following all food safety regulations and laws.

Here in the Yukon, food safety falls under Environment Health Services. They have a handy checklist available on food safety at home:

A good friend of ours worked code enforcement for many years in a nearby city, that included restaurant inspections, this was a particular concern of hers, so we go with it. ☺
