DIY Fix Broken iPod!

Step 2Careful

careful
When all the plastic parts are un-snapped ,
you can pull the ipod apart an inch or so , you only need to do one more step
Here is where this gets neat:

Fold the business card twice. So it is still springy.

Put the folder business card in the iPod on top of the blue sponge that is inside.

shut and snap the iPod back together.

So now it your iPod is back to normal, and all you needed was a folded business card!!

The blue sponge needed a little more pressure over time.

Hope you enjoy ! Digg to get maximum iPods fixed lol

Brought mine into TekServe, local NYC Mac specialists and I was assured that I had a bad zone on my HD, any ideas on how to get around this DIY-wise?

I will try this trick as well and report back!

Thanks so much. I have had my IPOD over top of the garbage can several times but could not bare to throw it out, thinking someday it would resurrect itself someway/somehow.

As a last resort I found this set of instructions online and thought, "What the heck, I will give it a try".

IT's ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again...

genius tip worked for me on a 4 1/2 yr old ipod photo 30gig on its 3rd battery. Died on me 2 days ago and had resigned myself to doing without till i could afford ipod touch. It's now charging happily after updating- many thanks, this is what makes the interweb so great

Very interesting. I opened up mine (even tho it was still working but you could shake or bump it and it would go off) and this looks like it could have been avoided by using a different material. Anyone suspect foul play on Apple's behalf? ;) It would be interesting to see how long they have been using this foam as a part of their design, as it would have become obvious to them very quickly it was a problem.
Oct 13, 2009. 5:49 PMllsncl says:
the problem has more to do with the hard drive than the blue foam, the blue foam is just used as a shock absorber to protect the drive from drops and shock. but as the drive gets old it loses pressure and can eventually quit working. this business card trick helps restore pressure to the drive. eventually however, the drive will fail for good and require replacement. it's easy though.

I just had to sign up to say thanks. My brother in law found a ipod in the park. It didn't turn on so he tried charging it. no luck, so he was going to throw it away. I took it, followed your advise and i must say "Truly amazing". Good looking out.

That's why Apple designed them to break, because you'll probably buy another iPod. Instead, you should threaten to buy a better mp3 player if it breaks.

does anyone know if there is a trick to fixing the input jack on the ipod (specifically the video ipod). i can listen to music, but not through both sides of the headphones, only one (and yes, i've made sure that its not my headphones)
Feb 26, 2009. 9:51 AMNisa says:
If you want a temp fix without having to buy the audio jack this is what I tried and it works fine. Take a small piece of aluminum foil and put it down it the jack. This will allow it to get full connectivity where it was missing and that should work. I did it to mine and it works fine. Note eventually I will replace it but for now it works great for me and its been over 6mths already and it is still going strong. Hope this help and helps anyone else that is having this kind of issue. Good Luck Guys !!!! :-)

Hey my ipod video had the exact same problem (also same ipod, video). The problem is the contacts in the barrel lose their spring and can't maintain pressure on the plug you put into the ipod. I fixed it by buying an ipod with a cracked screen that would start (same type of ipod) off my friend for $20. and then you have to pop it open and swap the whole piece pictured at this link http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/1626-headphone-jack-ipod-video.html. that is just my expierience i hope it helped

I have had this problem with my video ipod for a couple of years. My "solution" was to buy the Apple FM Tuner/Corded Remote. It was around $25-30. It plugs into the bottom of the ipod and has a separate headphone jack of it's own. It has allowed me to listen in stereo and to the radio to boot!
Dec 19, 2008. 1:38 PMcynical_chemical says:
try sticking a q-tip in the jack and twisting it around a bit, the parts where the headphones touch the jack could be dirty

I'd just open it up and check the connection. Maybe part of it came loose?
