DIY Chalkboard Canvas With Interchangeable Paper Roses for All Seasons

I like multi-purpose, 2 in 1, all-purpose, things like that. So, I had this idea of making a wreath that can be used for all seasons and finally ended up with this idea of making a chalkboard canvas with interchangeable paper roses. I really love how this turned out and I can't wait to share with you. Without much ado, let's dive into the steps.

Step 1: ​Materials Used:

• Canvas - 10" X 14"2
• Felt pieces - 8.5" X 11"
• Tacky glue
• Chalkboard paint
• Paint brush
• Chalk
• Scissors
• Velcro one wrap
• Colorful cardstock for making paper roses
• Glue gun & glue sticks
• Scissors
• Ribbon or Burlap ribbon for hanging the canvas
• Electronic cutting machine (optional)

Step 2:

Paint the canvas using chalkboard paint. Follow the instructions on the package as it may differ based on the brand you are using. I used Americana Chalkboard paint. I used two coats in the horizontal direction and two in the vertical direction and allowed the paint to dry completely in between the coats.

Step 3:

Season the chalkboard canvas using the chalk and wipe it off using a damp paper towel.

Step 4:

Mark the center of the canvas using the chalk and place the felt pieces meeting at the center as shown. Take a rough sheet of paper and make a template for the area to be exposed. This is going to be your chalkboard area and the rest will be covered in felt. I went with circle shape but you can do whatever shape your heart desires.

Step 5:

Trace the template using the chalk and cut the felt pieces with scissors. Apply tack glue using the paint brush and secure the felt pieces to the canvas. Apply glue to the sides of the canvas and cover it with the felt to get a cleaner look.

Step 6:

Use hot glue to attach the burlap ribbon to the back of the canvas to use as a hanger. I used a small strip of felt to glue on the top of the already glued burlap ribbon for additional security.

Step 7:

Now that the canvas is ready, it's time to make the paper roses. I used a free cut file from Shawna Clingerman's blog but you can find a lot of cut files for paper roses online. Choose the one which you prefer. I tried many ways to make paper roses but this suited me as I wanted the rose petals to be closer and the whole rose to be a tiny bud instead of wider rose as the wider ones will occupy more space. I did it a little modification to the cut file by cutting the inner 3 curves and replacing it with just a plain circle for closing the bottom of the rose.

No worries if you don't have an electronic cutting machine, there are a lot of tutorials for making paper flowers here on Instructables and also stay tuned to the end to read the alternatives for paper flowers.

Step 8:

Start by rolling the rose template from the outer edge.

Step 9:

When you reach the end, apply a dab of hot glue to secure the end.

Step 10:

Apply glue to the bottom as shown to secure the layers and close it with the circle.

Step 11:

Trim the excess paper at the bottom using scissors and attach a piece of velcro using hot glue with hook side facing out.

Step 12:

I added a big pearl bead to the center of the rose using hot glue.

Make several of them using different color cardstock for different occasions. I also cut three different green color leaves using my cutting machine and attached velcro to it for decorating along with the roses.

Step 13:

Now that the canvas and roses are ready, the only thing that is left to do is, arranging the roses as your heart desires and use chalk to write the message on the chalkboard. I did 7 different arrangements to give you some inspiration and ideas.

Step 14:

Can you believe you can make all these different signs from a single canvas? I absolutely love how this idea turned out. It need not be for different occasions, you can also use this canvas to write motivational quotes for your office space or as welcome sign for your guests in the living room or even as a fun activity canvas for your kid's room. This is also perfect as a door hanger /wreath.

Step 15:

Some other alternatives to paper roses are, you can mimic the same idea using fake flowers and velcro. Also, you can use fun plastic items or foam stickers with velcro back to add as props for different occasions like plastic easter eggs, fake fall leaves, plastic snowflakes, etc. The options are endless. As I had a lot of paper cardstock I went with paper roses option but you can typical customize it to your taste.
