I go to scrapbook stores like Archivers and get their free cardstock and then stick around to use their die cutters at the back of the store. Most scrapbooking stores will allow you to use their die cut machines for FREE if you buy some of their paper. (Be sneaky though and bring your stash with you and only buy a little then you can get more done AND you get access to some really cool shapes for little cost.)
Also, I've found that the really sturdy paper punches will go through the side of an aluminum can. I've done this for several projects, including gift tags. The punched can shapes look good plain OR you can use a Tim Holtz product called Alcohol Ink to add colors to the silver side.
