Introduction: DIY Hand-spin Generator Power Supply

Picture of DIY Hand-spin Generator Power Supply

In this instructable I will be showing you how to build a generator all

by yourself.

It is a powerful hand-spin generator, it can be a power supply(output voltage 4~30V) without need for a outlet, and it can help you to charge cellphone, laptop and so on.

This project is easy to build (and fun!) and it doesn’t cost you much, moreover, it can save you some electricity bill.

Step 1: You Will Need

Enclosures 125*125*90 (cm) x1

555 Metal Gear Motors x1

DC-DC Step Down Converter Module LM2596 x1

XL6009 DC-DC Booster Module Power supply x1

LCD Digital Voltmeter Ammeter Dual Display 10A x1

18650 Lithium Battery x4 (or what quantity you want)

18650 Charger Protection Circuit Board for 3.7V 8A x1

(Using it can protect the battery, but you can choose not to)

USB To DIP 2.54mm PCB board x1 (or what quantity you want)

10K Ohm Rotary Side Multiturn Potentiometer x1

Female banana plugs 1 Pair (RED + BLACK) x1

Toggle switch x2

33k Ohms resistor x1

8mm Hand handle x1

Ok let’s start some working here.

Step 2: Front Panel

First you need to drill some holes on the box.

Then place your V&A meter, usb host, switch, banana plugs in the holes.

And it will look like this

Step 3: Generator

Lock your motor

on the box (literally lock it, or it will probably be shake off when you squeeze the electricity from it) And remember to give it a try to make sure it will work fine and it’s comfortable to grip :)

Step 4: DC-DC Booster

Desoldering the variable from the XL6009 and attach to the variable we previous mentioned. Then parallel the 33K ohm resistance. Here is why we need that resistance: The voltage meter’s power input has a limit (mine are 30v), so you’ll need to parallel a resistance to limit the voltage from the XL6009.

Some of you may wonder why not just use the battery to run on the V&A meter, instead of using the voltage booster’s output. That’s because battery may drop below 4v, and yet, V&A meter needs at least 4v to work.

Step 5: Testing the Output

Picture of Testing the Output

Wire the motor with LM2596 and the diode (to prevent the electricity from going backwards and fried all your hardwork), and get your loadout, I use a little motor to be my loadout. Adjust the output voltage as 4.2v, it is the voltage that charge the lithium battery.

Step 6: Soldering

Picture of Soldering

Take your solder iron, and Solder as the picture says.

If you short the d+ and d- of your usb, your phone will recognize it as a quick charge, and that’s what we are going to do.

Switch 1: This is to choose the battery are on or not.

Switch 2: This is whether it outputs or not.

Example:

If you turn them both on, and plug in your phone, the energy save in the battery will charge your phone, and in the meantime, you can spin the handle to charge it too.

If you only turn on Switch 2, all the electricity output will come from spinning the handle.

If your only turn on Switch 1, you can spin the handle to charge the battery.

And how do you know how much electricity battery remains? you need to turn both Switch on, and no load for this time. Use the variable to adjust the output voltage as the minimum, when the V meter shows that 4.2 ~ 4.3 means it is fully charged, you are good to roll, but when it flickers、lights are out、or it drop below 3.7 means you need to give it some swings!

Warning!!! you must regulate the voltage as 5v before you charge your phone. or it will get burned down!!!

Step 7: Insulation

And this is the step we make sure everything is safe, please do a good insulation on your circuit. My advice? just use some electrical tape or some hot glue.

Step 8: Lock

After put in everything, lock up the box,you don't want them falling out.

Step 9: Swing the Hell Out of It!!

Tada! your generator is ready for a swing.

Again, make sure the output as 5v, then you can charge your cellphone.

im not sure the practicality of a hand crank genorator to charge your phone but i do know you have to be pretty skilled to make on so good job!
