Introduction: DIY Leather Glass Case
Looking for a beginner friendly leather craft project? Here's a project you can get started with. This leather glass case is so simply, easy to make but turns out really good.
You don't need much to make one as it requires basic craft supplies, you probably have all the supplies at home. Grab all the supplies, spare 15 minutes of your time, follow the instructions and craft on!
Step 1: Materials Needed
For this project you'll need:
- Tailor scissors
- Pencil or marker
- Waxed thread
- Large needle
- Wooden board
- Fabric paint and brush.
Step 2: Measureing and Cutting
Place the leather on a flat surface with its wrong side facing up. Place the glass on the wrong side of the leather.
Fold and wrap the leather around the glass once to measure the case size. Keep 2 cm extra on both open sides of the folded leather piece. Use a marker, chalk or pencil to trace along the sides of the leather.
Cut out the traced leather piece.Fold the leather piece into half width wise. Cut a round corner on any one of the open sides according to your glass size (see 2nd picture of this step).
Step 3: Making the Holes
Keep the leather piece folded. Place it on a wooden board and start making holes along the open sides of the folded leather piece.
After folding the leather one side will be closed, you'll need to make holes on 2 sides (lengthwise, including the round corner and the adjacent smaller side) and keep the last side open.
You can mark points for the holes to make sure that the gaps between them are even.
Use an awl and hammer to punch the holes. Try to punch the holes as neatly as possible.
Step 4: Stitching the Sides
Prepare your needle and thread. Start stitching from a side. Draw the needle through the first hole on the side, tie a knot.
Start your flat blanket stitch. You can do other stitches as well but flat blanket stitch is great for stitching sides.
Stitch all the way to the other end. Keep the stitches neat and equal as much as possible.
Tie a knot after reaching the end, cut off extra thread and draw the remaining thread inside the case.
Step 5: Designing
Time to add some patterns on the leather. I did a simple geometric design on the case using golden fabric paint.
You can trace the design before painting or simply do a simple free hand painting.
Allow the paint to dry completely.
You can use different colored leathers, fabric paints, patterns and create different designs.
We have a be nice policy.
