I saw the title and thought this was a Lightning effect (as in, flashing light imitating the natural weather phenomenon), not a lighting rig, I think the title's a touch wrong... :S Nice idea... :)

ordinary household florescent bulbs will have green spikes and there color rendering will be poor. If you use bulbs like the Eiko Photo Pro SP30/955K the rendering will be much better. You can get those at www.lightson.com
