DIY Multimedia LED Projector (video manual)

Step 3Placing the LED in the Heat Sink

Placing the LED in the Heat Sink

The High Power LED needs to be placed on a Heat sink. The heat sink I'm using is not as big as I would like, that's why I added a fan to cool off the heat sink.

1.- Mark the holes where you'll fix the LED.

2.- Make the holes with the drill.

3.- Put some thermal paste grease.

4.- Fix the LED to the Heat sink.

5.- Find a way to fix the condenser lens later. ( I used some slide lens adapter that I had hanging around. You could use any plastic tube. Make the necessary holes for the cables)

6.- Solder the cables to the LED (Protect the LED before soldering. Pay good attention to the polarity, It should say it)

Here is the video of how I've done it.

hi newtonn :)

i was thinking about the how to power the led can i use this power suplly for the led and for the 12v voltage regulator only? i am going to use two power suplys

one for the led and the lcd monitor

and the other for the speakers and the fan

I think i burnt out the led but i am not sure. My led did not have the polarities written on it. So i tried one way and it didnt work and then when i tried the other way the led was blinking (this was with the laptop charger listen in the materials). So i fiugured that it wasnt enough power and i tried it with a computer power cord and nothing happened. Then when i tried again with the original laptop charger it didnt work at all and the wires that i soldered are a little brown.

i used the same led you had listed in materials. I just wanted to test it out. Do you think the led is burnt out or its just needs to be connected to the correct voltage? if so how else could i test the thing? Unfortunately i dont have a bench power supply, it should be my next project.

okay, i ordered another led... hopefully i wont make the same mistake as last time.. Im kind of jumping back and forth between this and the desk with the built in pc, otherwise i would go ahead and build the bench power supply as it would be very handy.

Do you know of any other lcd's this size that would have better resolution. I have been going crazy trying to find something a little better, even if it means i have to spend a little more.

Can I use a 20w 12 volt high power led instead of a 30w 18 volt ?

ok.i am going to buy a 30w led that works at 13.5/18 volt and 2 amp

First: Great project!
Second: I know it was already asked several times, but:
I bought a 7" display and now I want to know, whether I could use the 50W LED from the ebay sellers, like yours. Do you think it´s strong enough to make a good picture (the room would be nearly totaly dark)?
Want to use the lens of an old OHP and put the projector on in a distance of  ~3,5meters...

Sorry for bad english :P Greetings from Germany :D

Just don't go to big or you will washout your picture.
Mar 30, 2010. 8:32 AMjj.inc says:
that LED looks just the right size to attach a CPU fan to, and they usually come with thermal paste.
Jan 29, 2010. 7:38 AMpoweroflight says:
How large does the heat sink need to be.  The heat sink you use in the video seems to be larger than any of the ones i have on hand, yet you say it is small.

Thanks for your help,
Francisco
