D.I.Y. Neck Knives....

 by HTWTUSA
ChiselBladdDone.jpg
Okiedokie....so you have some spare time and a dull circular saw blade layin' in the floor of your "shop"....

Here's how to fashion a quality neck knife, better than any Chinese-made garbage you get at the hunting store...with stronger materials, and cheaper, to-boot.....

Remember this: MOST neck knives on the market are made from low-quality, Chinese steel, are half or less tang, and cost between $19 and $50....
Quality saw blades are high-carbon steel, tempered to resist breakage and wear, and cost nothing to save from the garbage

Hope you enjoy the 'ible, and please check out my website www.htwtusa.com!

Step 1: Tools & Materials....

gig-swiss-knife.jpg
For this project, you'll need a few basics....

*angle grinder with cutoff wheel or metal band saw, etc...
*bench grinder...
*drill and steel-cutting bit...
*disc or belt sander...
*sharpening stone or implement...
*tool wax...
*550 paracord...
*scrap kydex or plastic sheet (old plastic Nintendo sleeves work well, also)...
*plastic tool hande dip...
*carbon- tempered circular-saw blade (no cheap stamped steel garbage)...

I figured it would be kind of silly to post another "instructible" for a knife made with the same process, but thought you guys might like a looksie at my latest design, anyway, so....enjoy.......it just goes to illustrate one of the many adaptations which can be made with this simple platform and process....

My next dull saw blade will be reincarnated as a "Karambit" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karambit.

Definitely a great application of this process...I would love to see the finished project.

Thats not a knife that, a knife store!

FYI , every state has its own legal knife length. Last I heard NY is four fingers across to be legal any longer and the man can take it and you if he wants, to the slammer! Also depends on the situation at hand and if the "officer" has had his donuts and coffe! Met some good cops and some bad, all kinds out there. They all have good and bad days too, just like real people do! If the female in his life is bitchin all the time he will most likely be looking to take it out on you! If she is nice and cuddly he will be more tolerant! So good luck !

First, this was a great instruction on how to make a neck knife. Second, I hate to be a know it all, but I wanted to clear up the blade length legality issue. Some states do have their own double edge or serrated edge issues. Many states have length restrictions from 3" in restrictive states up to less restrictive like Montana. In states like Montana you can carry a sword as long as it is sheathed but not concealed (the law as of a decade ago when I checked back then). Most important to all of this is that if the knife is concealed and law enforcement wants to make a stink about it, a concealed knife is an illegal knife almost everywhere, and the exceptions are thin. Don't get in trouble and avoid giving law enforcement a reason to frisk you and find your set of throwing knives hiding but ready for use. Don't make it look like your knife is intended as a threat to someone else and you won't have to worry about the other length/serrated issues. I know this may have been an old thread, but I liked HTWTUSA's well instructed and legitimate project, better not to leave questions about legality at the conclusion. Hope this helps.

I've heard old leaf springs from cars is great steel to use for homemade knives. Anyone have experience making any with them?
Master Beorn in reply to cannibal_hect0rDec 8, 2011. 6:24 PM
I have... but it is a LOT of work. If you are gonna put in the work for spring steel... make a sword. It takes just as long as a knife. Really.
panzerfaust379 in reply to cannibal_hect0rMay 20, 2011. 6:32 PM
I've made several, you need to remove the temper first to work the steel,Then re temper & last sharpen. better read up on it first.
woodreaux in reply to cannibal_hect0rSep 6, 2010. 6:37 AM
Leaf springs DO make great knives...but they are wayyyyy too hard to use unless you can do some involved blacksmithing with a forge, annealing the metal and then drawing the metal back to a tempered hardness. Stock removal is not recommended either, the metal is too hard and will eat grinding wheels up. Stick with the saw blades or reshape old high quality butcher type knives.

I took a stainless steel meat cleaver and made a bowie knife.
bobthebuilder728 says: Oct 3, 2011. 8:58 PM
Check out my circular saw blade knives. The older circular saw blades are so much better because of the quality of the steel. Great Knife!
ShoneDemonscales says: Jul 30, 2011. 8:52 PM
Ok, in Texas and most other states, the legal length for a knife is 5" it cannot be double bladed and yes a serrated blade still counts as blade. The mans palm this is some BS that people try to use as a benchmark. cops will whip out a tape measure, keep it below 5 and only one side of it can have an edge. :) happy hunting
qwerty2008 in reply to ShoneDemonscalesSep 9, 2011. 7:05 PM
California allows any size fixed blade knife and up to 6" concealed knives
HTWTUSA (author) in reply to ShoneDemonscalesAug 6, 2011. 1:27 PM
What he said...and remember: that's specifically for your EDC blade...I have an Arkansas Toothpick and several Kabars which exceed these length limits, but they are reserved specifically for outdoor activities and S&P...

Carrying anything bigger than five inches around with you every day is asking for one of two things: Trouble, or discomfort...xD
sonofstone says: May 5, 2011. 1:40 PM
i gotta try this, though it may not be legal here
spencedaddy in reply to sonofstoneJun 15, 2011. 8:50 PM
im not sure but normaly knives are legal as long as they arent over 3"
sonofstone in reply to spencedaddyJun 16, 2011. 12:55 PM
fixed blades are legal i think, and the rule here says, if the blade is longer than a mans handpalm, its illegal
tylerzee in reply to sonofstoneJun 17, 2011. 3:27 PM
false lol
TonyODonnell01 says: Apr 29, 2011. 2:26 PM
The carbide tips off a saw blade make great arrow tips. You just have to make sure it does not hit a rock or anything like that.
jsawyer says: Jan 29, 2011. 9:49 AM
I was wondering how to keep the knife secure in the sheath. The business card magnet is a great idea!

I'm going to look through my old saw blades! Thanks!
looker1995 says: Aug 1, 2010. 8:40 AM
For those of you looing for blade material other than saw blades, check your local Goodwill, Salvaton Army, garage sale, etc., for old carbon steel butcher knives. The steel is usually good, and the blades are big enough to remake into other shapes. Don't forget to remove the handle to give yourself more material to work with.

Yeah I was reading about the Swiss Army Knife and they make a 9-inch one for $1200 and I think it has something like 85 attachments. This is the first picture I've ever seen of it
Robot Lover in reply to Hunter O.Jul 22, 2010. 6:16 PM
