How many times have you dropped your precious iPhone and cringed as it fell to its doom? With the DIY Phone Case, you will never have to worry again! This case provides extra padding for your beloved iPhone to prevent damage from those terrifying drops. It's time to get your super sewing skills on and give your phone the protection it deserves!
- Sewing machine with thread
- Thick, sturdy interfacing
- Fusible, iron-on interfacing
- Cotton material with print of your choice
- Fabric scissors
- Fabric Fusion glue
Step 1: Interfacing for the Body
Begin by finding a thick, sturdy interfacing (I did not use the iron-on type). Measure 1 inch down from the top, and mark a line across. Place your iPhone 1/2 inch down from the line, and measure 1/2 inch on all sides. Mark these borders around the phone. The vertical line on the inner side (left side in my photo) will serve as the folding line to make the other half of the interfacing body. Remove your phone, and fold along this line. Cut the interfacing body out, and unfold it.
Next, fold the 1" line down toward the side of the interfacing with the markings. This side will become the outside of the phone case. Sew along this line.
Step 2: The Flap and Outer Fabric
Now it's time to make the flap for the phone case. Cut out a rectangle of thick interfacing as wide as the phone case will be (half of the interfacing body rectangle) and around 3 inches tall. Cut out outer fabric and fusible, iron-on interfacing with the same dimensions as the flap rectangle. Iron the interfacing onto the outer fabric, and sew this piece onto the thick interfacing flap piece.
For the body of the phone case, cut out exterior fabric and iron-on interfacing that measure a little wider and taller than the thick interfacing body you made earlier. Iron the interfacing onto the exterior fabric, but do not sew the fabric onto the thick interfacing body just yet!
Step 3: Sew on the Flap
Next, pin the flap onto the top of the interfacing body. If you are using a print with pictures on it, the images should appear upside-down. Place the flap 1/2 inch from the top, and sew.
Now place the exterior body fabric on top of the interfacing body after hemming the top of the fabric. Sew along the top. Flip the phone case over. There should be some of the exterior fabric hanging over the edges. Iron these flaps to the inside of the case, and sew along the edges.
Step 4: Making the Pouch
Fold the piece in half, and sew along the bottom and side. Now you have a pouch! You are almost done!
Step 5: Velcro Time!
Finally, it is time for the velcro. Break out the Fabric Fusion glue and your velcro squares. Glue a row of the velcro squares down near the top edge of the flap. Slip your phone inside the case to estimate where the corresponding velcro should go. Remove your phone, and glue the other velcro row down. Let dry overnight.
Step 6: You Are Done!
Congrats, you have finished making your very own iPhone Case! It will save your phone from horrific drops! These phone cases make excellent gifts for friends and family. Enjoy your new phone case!
