how to make you very own lock picks! out of house hold items1!!!11 yay!

I was browsing through some random instructables not finding anything of much interest except ALL OF TETRANITRATES POSTS! boy man your my idol!
so neways i thought to myself "hmm not many good instructables on making professional lock picks" and so my very fist instructable was born.....

this instructable will outline some very good methods of making quite good lock picks that function surprisingly well.

Step 1: MATERIALS! AND OVERVIEW

MATERIALS!!!
2 hacksaw blades (ammount can vary)
bench grinder.
assorted allan keys.
files (if you do not posses a bench grinder).
and if you dont have either a bench grinder or files at a very last resort you can use a angle grinder with metal disk (EXTREEMLY DANGEROUS)

Robotrix says: Nov 6, 2006. 1:52 PM
It would help people who don't know how to use these tools if you explained what they were for. It might seem obvious to you that a tension wrench needs to fit into most keyways, but what if someone didn't know how to use it? Where does it need to fit into keyways? How thin should it be? Picks made with a grinder are going to need some serious sanding before they work well enough to be called professional. Unsanded picks will get caught on pins constantly. Also, your spelling is atrocious, and you didn't actually mention more than one way to make either picks or tension wrenches, or alternate materials for either like windshield washer blade inserts, street sweeper tines, spring steel strapping, or old steel rulers. I'd appreciate seeing more research going into this and more instruction coming out.

stainless steel paring knives, ground to the correct size. they're a little tougher than the carbon steel hacksaw blades. Also, sawblades with a high chromium content are much more flexible and still as hard, tho that might interfere with the sensations involved slightly. I don't see the point in doing anything other than the carbon steel ones, actually, because they're (fairly) quick to make, and very cheap.
stone3408 in reply to RobotrixNov 7, 2006. 5:55 AM
Street sweeper brushes are sweet...I thought that I was the only one. They require a great deal less work to shape and make the best tension wrenches. They tend to be difficult to work with however and I mount them in an ink pen housing with epoxy for a more comfortabe feel. I like the windshield wiper insert idea.

I think being suicidal is hilarious! Of course, the definition of "Suicidal" would have to be "commiting an act of being mentally challenged, causing death" in a sentence, it would be used like this: "The suicidal guy, put a paper bag on his head, and proceeded to set the bag on fire."

Nice Instructable. I did something similar to this a few years back but rather than using Hack-saw blades, I bought to sets of "Feeler Gauge's". It's a simple tool used to measure gap-widths. They're mostly used in engineering to measure the clearance between two parts. I chose them because they're chrome plated, inconspicuous and easily machined. Three years later and I've still got them.
locofocos in reply to eamongllDec 13, 2007. 1:38 PM
Ooh, that is a GOOD idea man..... cause you got like a few dozen to work with the size of a pocket knife. locofocos starts to want his own feeler gauge...
Doctor What says: Nov 6, 2007. 2:21 PM
you know, if you actually wanted to burn a bag on your head, you could cover an area with hand sanitizer, a lot, and light the sanitizer on fire, usually when i do this on my hand, it doesn't burn. it might slow down the burning of the bag. probly would want someone with a fire extinguisher standing by.
Doctor What in reply to Doctor WhatNov 6, 2007. 2:24 PM
by the way, i wouldn't do the hand thing if i were you, but if you wanted to, you would squeeze a glob of sanitizer in your hand, light the sanitizer on fire, and close your hand, real fast, when it gets hot.

I was taught to make mine out of the street sweeper pins. Just walk along the gutter the day after the sweeps go through and if you have a sharp eye, you can collect a good dozen in 10 minutes. Use a dremil tool with grinding wheel to shape your pick and use another to make your tension bar. They're likely more redily available than spokes
ich bin ein pyro says: Apr 24, 2007. 11:58 AM
great now all everybody needs is to make an instructable on how to lock-pick
GutterClown says: Apr 6, 2007. 9:25 AM
I am a locksmith, but when I was bored as a kid I started picking locks with these things. Hacksaw picks are very much like using a sledge hammer to hit craft-nails. very brutal and bulky. If you ever touch a real pick, you'll never want to dirty your hands with a hacksaw pick ever again.

That said, these *do* work. If your picks don't work, chances are it's because you can't work them.

The only real hint I can give, is to use some wat\dry superfine grit sandpaper on the entire pick before using it. And make sure the shafts, handle, and pick heads are all smooth\round\whatever the shape. otherwise, with sharp and misshapen picks, you can damage the pins in the lock cylinder and get a pick stuck.

Have fun. and personally, my favorite pick is the Hook pick. you can get in and work individual pins, diamonds can't do that.
Vendigroth in reply to GutterClownApr 18, 2007. 3:38 PM
i like the hook pick too, but i put a verrrry sligh concave dent into the end, so i can find and grip the pins better

i make my lock picks from hacksaw blades and bicycle spokes if you want a good tension wrench you should take a windshield wiper and and take the metal strips from it then bend them at a right angle and cut them these work great as tension wrenches and you can even make twist flex wrenches

Vendigroth in reply to assplosionzJan 30, 2007. 8:35 AM
sanding them down'd remove any burrs (fluffed up bits of metal) from the edge, amking them smoother and less likely to catch on pins, i don't think taking the paint off'd do anything. i sanded mine and then put bluing solution on them

Robotrix in reply to assplosionzNov 8, 2006. 6:57 AM
Not had much first hand experience in what, running spell check? If you are currently in the process of making ANY instructable, it should contain words that are spelled right. Would you read a textbook where every fourth word was misspelled and the author used a combination of !'s and 1's in his fury to tell you about something? Yeah, i'm off my meds, because you couldn't take the ten seconds it would have required to make this more readable.
Vendigroth in reply to RobotrixFeb 7, 2007. 3:12 PM
It's an instructable detailing the production of lock picks. Not an excerpt from a textbook on grammar. As long as it gets the point across, I don't think spelling or grammar really matter, as long as it's understandable.
RobbyTheSheef in reply to RobotrixFeb 3, 2007. 3:20 AM
It's the mans first instructable, cut the man some slack already. I'm all for semi-proper grammar, but for gods sake man, it's the frickin' internet. If a combination of !s and 1s is unreadable to you, then I'm afraid it is YOU who is a moron. If you couldn't grasp the meaning of a sentence because it contained "neways", then you sir, are are dumb.

hacksaw blades are great but they don't have a whole lot of tensile strength. I prefer to use a drywall tape knife that wal-mart stocks. It looks like a really wide putty knife but the blade can be unscrewed and it is a 6"x8" sheet of spring steel. Yeah, it's more work to make the picks with because you have to cut out the handles as well but the first time you snap off a hacksaw pick in a lock you'll be more than happy to put in the extra time.
Robotrix in reply to dijital101Nov 8, 2006. 6:54 AM
You shouldn't need a whole lot more strength. Odds are you're using too much tension. Lock picking should use very light, very gentle pressure, just enough to get the pins to bind.
