Pussy Riot supporters around the world have been protesting their imprisonment by donning homemade balaclavas like the ones Pussy Riot wore during the performance for which they were arrested. This tutorial will show you how to make your own homemade balaclava, with images of the members of Pussy Riot who were arrested displayed on it, to wear in support of them.
"we are open-source-extremists, the feminist virus infecting your thoughts." - Pussy Riot
Step 1: Stuff you will need
- computer with image editing software
- iron-on T-shirt transfer paper
- sewing machine
Step 2: Preparing the fabric
Find a t-shirt that is big enough to wrap around your head and cut out the entire front or back of it to get one large piece of fabric.
Step 3: Print your images
Open your images in an image editing program and make them the correct size to fit onto your fabric. Then print them out on your iron-on transfer paper and make sure they fit onto your fabric (you may want to try this with some scratch paper first).
I chose to position my images so that there was enough space between the images of the Pussy Riot members to cut the holes for the eyes and the mouth.
Step 4: Iron-on the transfer
Lay the fabric flat and position the iron-on transfer paper so that it will be over your face when you put the balaclava on. Then follow the instructions on the iron-on transfer paper to transfer the images onto the fabric (note: do not use packing tape to hold your transfer paper in place like I did, it will melt and make a mess!).
Step 5: Cut a zig-zag
Once you've transferred your images to the fabric, measure the length that you want your balaclava to be from the base of your neck to the center of the top of your head. Cut the fabric to that length, then cut the top of your fabric into a zig-zag with 4 equally spaced points.
