Introduction: DIY Rainbow Cake

Have you ever wondered how to make a rainbow cake? It's simpler than you think! In this Instructable, I will show you how to create a decorate a delicious cake that looks like a rainbow!

Step 1: Make the Batter.

First things first, you have to make a cake. Use your favorite cake recipe. I recommend that you use a vanilla or white cake recipe as it will be much easier to color (unlike chocolate cake).

Step 2: Separate.

Separate your cake batter evenly into six bowls. Make sure that each bowl will hold one-sixth of your batter. Add a small spoon to each bowl.

Step 3: Color!

Now it's time to add some color. I used generic liquid food coloring to make these colors. While they make look very light and pastel-like, they get darker through baking. As a rule, I used 3-5 drops for each color I already had (red, yellow, green, and blue). I used more yellow than red for orange, and I used more blue than red for purple.

Step 4: Get Ready to Bake. Bake.

I used shortening to attach parchment paper to the sides and bottom of each pan. While I used smaller pieces in this Instructable, I recommend you use one larger sheet for each pan.

While your recipe may call for different baking instructions (and also may not factor in the separation of the batter), I baked my cakes for 10-15 minutes (closer to 15 minutes) at 350 degrees. As I only had space in the oven for 3 pans, I baked mine in batches to get all 6.

Step 5: Make Frosting. Build.

It is a good idea to start working on the frosting while baking. I used a whipped frosting to make this cake, but you can use a buttercream or any other frosting. Because you likely used a white cake recipe for the cake, your frosting makes your cake original to you and will make it stand out.

Once your cakes have fully cooled and your frosting is ready, it is time to build. Start by placing your purple cake on your serving tray. Frost on top of your purple cake. Continue this process with your blue cake, green cake, yellow cake, orange cake, and red cake respectively.

Step 6: Neaten and Decorate.

Next, you are going to want to cover your cake entirely with your frosting to make it look nicer. Chances are, your cakes may not have come out perfectly and don't look too even. Frosting is a great and delicious way to cover up your mistakes.

How you decorate it is up to you. I chose to add gummy bears. I carefully and neatly lined the top and bottom of the cake with gummy bears. Regardless of your choice of decorating, I recommend doing some sort of border like I did, as it makes your cake look more professional.

As this cake was a birthday cake, I wrote "17" (the age) in gummy bears. You could also write a message or birthday wish to the top of your cake.

In case you were wondering, the whipped frosting tastes really great with the gummy bears. At the birthday party, we had extra gummy bears and we dipped it in the frosting because it was so delicious.

Step 7: Enjoy!

The final step is to eat it. You have worked so hard on your cake, and now it's time for your work to pay off. My cake was devoured by everyone; there were no leftovers. It was amazing and I hope that yours is too!
