DIY Victoria's Secret Ruched Hiphugger Panties

FeaturedContest Winner
Victoria's Secret Ruched Hiphugger Panties are one of my favorite underwear styles. They give a simple hip-hugger or boy-short pattern a cute twist. I will teach you an easy way to make your own ruched panties. The pair I made for this tutorial is for ruched-front hip-hugger panties, but this also works to make a ruched-back panty, thongs, bikini's, etc...

Step 1: Materials

Picture of Materials
Main Materials
  1. Lycra/Cotton Fabric Blend - about 30" x 20" worth
  2. Elastic - thin piece of elastic (mine was 1/8" width) and 1.5" in length. The length also depends on how much rouching you want.
  3. Sewing Machine (I used a serger as well, but this can all be done on a sewing machine)
  4. Stretch Needle (for sewing machine) - this is necessary for properly sewing lycra/spandex fabrics
Minor Materials
  1. Thread
  2. Needle - for sewing by hand
  3. Pins

Step 2: Cut Pattern

As I said before you can use this technique for any style of underwear. I chose to make hiphuggers. You can download the pattern I made in a PDF. This pattern piece is for both the front and back pieces.

Fold the fabric over and place the edge of the pattern marked "place on edge" on the folded edge. Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out leaving about 1/2 inch from the edge of the pattern. Repeat this for your second pattern piece.

**Since I have the original pattern piece I didn't need to place it on the edge of the fabric.

Step 3: Finish Edges

To finish the edges of the underwear you will need to fold over all the exposed edges twice. See image below to know what edges to fold over.

Since I have a Serger, instead of folding the exposed edges over twice, I serged the edges then folded them over once and sewed them down using a zig-zag stitch.

If you don't have a serger, fold the exposed edges over once and sew them down using a zig-zag stitch. Fold the edges down again and sew them down using a zig-zag stitch.

You'll want to get some elastic around the top so they don't get progressively looser whilst wearing and fall down. Insert it under the folded down top with zig zag stitch.
Actually, one of my favorite things about these undies is that they DON'T have elastic, so nothing catches, pinches, or digs. I've had mine for several years, and they still stay up just fine, so I think the quality of the stretch fabric is the biggie.

Very cute and simple. What type of fabric would you suggest to create a lining?

One size fits all?
Yeah I was gonna ask... "free size" doesn't necessarily fit everybody. An indication of what size range the PDF pattern is good for would be nice.
Okay, maybe I do need to make my own underwear after all. Those are adorable!

These are neat, I love your photography skills! Each shot is laid out so professionally.

I think a picture of these on a manequin / model of sorts would help illustrate why these are such a nice style.
