D.I.Y. Sexy Spikey Pumps (High Heels)

 by lmnopeas

Have your ever coveted a pair of Sam Edelman Lorissa pumps? If you're anything like me, you've got three or four on your wish list but can't justify the $200-$300 price tag? Now you can make these awesome Spikey Pumps, for less than  a fraction of the cost and you can use what ever shoe and spikes you want.

The spikes I used to create this look are called  Screw Back Spikes and come in various sizes, colors & shapes. There are many internet sources to purchase them and I have provided links in the first step. I definitely recommend shopping around for different price points. Ebay seems to have some of the cheapest screwbacks, but they typically ship from Hong Kong, which can take a couple weeks to arrive.

If you've never used a power drill before, it's really no big deal. I recommended using an old shoe for practice first, before you start drilling holes in the heels you will use for this project.

I was able to create these shoes for less than $40 total, including shipping costs. (I already had the shoes).

Have fun!

Very intresting, and to the point

About the screw problem. ... You can take out the stitches of the original shoe liner (where you will be drilling) before putting in the hardwear. Then put in some extra padding and sew it back up. And when the padding begins to wear thin you just replace it.

That's a great idea! Thanks!

not my color, but really looks amazing.
Wouldn't it make things more stable, if you drill into the heel and insert tiny bits of threaded bar instead of glueing screws?
lmnopeas (author) in reply to LuziviechApr 20, 2012. 11:18 AM
It's definitely worth a try, thanks!

Where did you get the original shoes? They're gorgeous to start with - with the spikes they're beyond brilliant.

They have a great selection of shoes, clothes & accessories which are very reasonably priced.
Rachybell says: Nov 25, 2011. 2:30 PM
These are brilliant! I just ordered myself a whole bunch of spikes and gonna get on it asap!

I look forward to people not shoving into me at the bar any more haha :D
lmnopeas (author) in reply to RachybellNov 26, 2011. 10:36 AM
LOL! Please post a pic when you finish. :)
watergirl888 says: Nov 26, 2011. 3:34 AM
you can easily cut a piece of vinyl or thin leather( you could even use a lightweight velveteen or corduroy too) to fit on the inner side where the spikes attach and just glue it down with basic white glue used for fabric or leather. Make a simple paper pattern to fit , then cut your pieces and voila, no more feeling the back side of the spikes. No rubbing or blisters.
CookieMonstah123 says: Nov 24, 2011. 10:50 AM
Can u please upload a picture of u wearing them wit a outfit because thay are cute but i dont know how to wear them!!!
lmnopeas (author) in reply to CookieMonstah123Nov 25, 2011. 12:24 PM
I uploaded a pic. You could also make it more casual with a denim mini skirt and a solid colored tank. You don't want to accessorize with bracelets or necklaces because the spikes on the shoes are more than enough. A simple ring would be perfect. Bonus points if it's a spikey one!
chicopluma in reply to CookieMonstah123Nov 25, 2011. 7:51 AM
you´re right, awsome shoes, reminds me of a lobster, but a i can´t imagine a dress that fit but a lobster costume. maybe some custom made dress with the same decoration.
tkjtkj in reply to CookieMonstah123Nov 24, 2011. 4:38 PM
hahaha .. are you sure you don't just what to see the rest of her .. a person who is cool-enough actually to wear such shoes??

Really, we all do share your curiosity!
tkjtkj says: Nov 24, 2011. 4:33 PM
Amazing idea! you're a true 'Shoe Gur-oe' .. haha..
I know my ex gf would have loved these ..
AND those 'How to defend yourself in a parking garage instructor guys' might want to add your weapons...errrrr.... shoes! to their recommended arsenal of defensive devices!!
Nice job! you took a simple idea and ran with it, and THEN you shared it! bravo!
(Btw, the person who suggested your drilling technique was 'risky': i dont agree .. You did fine! You clearly are in command of your tools ;)
'Sugru', i believe, is the wrong material to protect feet from the screw-heads: better to have shoes SLIGHTLY larger (perhaps) and to hotglue a smooth fabric-like material to entirely cover the inside heel surface! .. INMHO , which, of course , is perfect ;)
lmnopeas (author) in reply to tkjtkjNov 25, 2011. 8:35 AM
Thanks! Actually, you can hardly feel the screws at the back of the heel at all. I am still trying to figure out the right solution to cover up the left and right sides. After walking around for a while, you can definitely feel there preference. I wouldn't describe it as painful, but noticeable.
cguerra says: Nov 24, 2011. 12:14 PM
How do the screws not make your feet ache?
lmnopeas (author) in reply to cguerraNov 25, 2011. 8:19 AM
I tightened the heads of the screws as tight as I could to make them flush with the shoe, but plan on covering them up as soon as I figure out the right solution.
andrej says: Nov 24, 2011. 8:13 AM
that drilling was extremely unsafe!
lmnopeas (author) in reply to andrejNov 25, 2011. 8:11 AM
I managed to keep all of my fingers.
kristylynn84 says: Nov 20, 2011. 10:47 PM
those are beautiful! :D but do you cover up the screw heads on the inside of the shoe, so you don't hurt your feet?
nartyteek in reply to kristylynn84Nov 24, 2011. 3:25 PM
What i've done to cover up similar additions to shoes is just cut felt and hot glued it to the inside, mainly to keep nylons from snagging. There is probably a more elegant solution but i've had that fix last for years.
lmnopeas (author) in reply to kristylynn84Nov 21, 2011. 9:31 AM
I haven't covered them yet, but I am going to apply a thin layer of Sugru over the screws. It isn't to uncomfortable with them exposed, but I don't know how long you'd last on the dance floor.
EmKay73 in reply to lmnopeasNov 24, 2011. 7:14 PM
I'd use a double layer of moleskin to cover the screws... you never know when you might need to replace a spike. You can get moleskin at CVS from good ole Dr. Scholl.
lmnopeas (author) in reply to EmKay73Nov 25, 2011. 8:22 AM
That could be a good solution. Thanks!
agis68 says: Nov 24, 2011. 11:13 AM
you did very good job unless is out of my believs....(a woman shoe might be something that is make cute the foot of a lady.)..this spikey shoes makes me to avoid to look the feet on it....anyway

I must commend you are a beautiful instructable but i unfortunately have to
disagree with it being "Sexy Spike Pumps " as there is not enough leg to justify it. LOL

lmnopeas (author) in reply to cursed_krossNov 23, 2011. 4:58 PM
The best part about making these yourself is that you have total control over the shoes and spikes you use. please post pics when you finish yours. :)
tseemann says: Nov 23, 2011. 2:03 PM
Those are super spiky! ^_^ but with my balance (or lack thereof ) I would fall and hurt something important. lol

I love your use of a black & Decker drill! I can;t wait to share this with my wife. Those are really cool.
lmnopeas (author) in reply to leeskiNov 21, 2011. 4:54 PM
Thanks! The black & decker works great, but I did ended up buying a Dewalt drill bit for this project.
