Free Squid Hat Pattern with pictures!

Time to make: 3-4 hours from start to finish.

Supply List:
Polar Fleece (about 2 feet)
All Purpose Thread
Velcro or snaps
Large Craft Eyes (I used 35 mm)

Download and print the pattern images in this step.

Step 1: Cut Out Pattern Pieces

Print out pattern and cut out.

To save time, fold your fabric in half so that you are cutting out two pieces instead of one.

Place on polar fleece and cut out pattern.

I cut mine free form and just held the pattern down, but it might be a better idea to pin the paper to the fabric first.

Note: Before cutting decide if you want a hat brim that is stretchy or one that fits more precisely. If you want a stretchy brim, which I recommend, pull on your fabric to figure out which way the fabric stretches. Once you've got that place your pattern along the direction of the stretch.

If you don't want your brim to stretch place it in the direction the fabric does not stretch.
Just wanted to post my success! I had to make an adjustment by multiplying the dimensions by like 1.2 cuz my head is big, and I took of that band and just hemmed the bottom with the big tentacles on the inside. But total success! Everyone is genuinely shocked that I made this suh-weet baby! =D Thanks!
Oooooooh, eerie black squid to boot!
i made 3 in total, and still need to make one for myself! <br /> <br /> I made it a little different, and didn't put eyes on it. <br /> <br /> <br /> (yes, i have used this fabric in other ibles!)<br />
omg you are so rad!!! i have been looking for a pattern/hat like this FOREVER!! i made mine last night and i thought i'd share..! i tweaked a few little things, oh and you cant see but i added some squiddy legs in the back =3 but thank you so much for posting this tutorial! keep up the awesomeness!<br/><br/>
This pattern is adorable! I'm making three for xmas presents, one in blue, one in lime green, and one in purple. I couldn't find craft eyes big enough, so I used buttons, and I stitched down the small tentacles instead of using velcro, so far my first hat came out great! thanks a ton :3
Oh hey, how long did it take you to put it together? Just wondering what kind of time variable there might be on making these.
The first one(blue) took about 3 hours, the second one(green) was between 2 and 2 1/2, and the last one(purple) took about an hour. I'm going to make a slightly modified red Dr. Zoidberg one next :P
You are so awesome!
OMG I love the button eyes so much! I have to try that out next time. :D
I really like the way they came out, and using a rotary cutter makes cutting the fabric go twice as fast. :) For my Dr. Zoidberg hat I'm going to use the same size buttons in white, and sew another, smaller black button on top of each for pupils.
Nice hat! I'm a big fan of squids (see my blog: <a rel="nofollow" href="http://blog.nachotime.com/?tag=squid">http://blog.nachotime.com/?tag=squid</a> ). It reminds me of my <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/timfo/2997251715/in/set-72157608602908320/">halloween costume</a> this year:<br/><br/> I've got the urge to make a bunch of these hats and run amok causing havok with my very own army of squidlings!<br/>
Your costume is awesome! Is the black part mesh so you can see and breathe okay? So cool... :) If you run amok show me some pictures of the chaos!
I was going for the one-eyed monster squid look, but that wasn't too clear in the end. I might make some modifications for next year. With the time I spent on that costume, I'll get as much use out of it as I can!
AWESOME! super funny too, I tried making my own but I'm a kid not even a teenager. So I just flopped my arms and gave up. All that shopping for nothing!
omg this is amazing i love squids sooo much there amazing i going to make one of these for all my freinds :p
Ah, at last I have found some people who appreciate cephalopods as much as myself. I have a huge squid fan and believe I will reincarnate into a squid when I die! As you can see, I am a weirdo, BUT squids do rule so I will definitely make this hat and prove to the whole world that squids are AMAZING! <br><br>Now, I feel the urge to wear a cheese hat. Can some one post a pattern for a cheese hat please?
I find the hat somehow cute.....
Squidheads Anonymus is on their way.
hello :) i just finished making the squid hat!! all sew by hand, not machine :D! and with a few modifications :) thank you so much for posting this really good tutorial! even tho, like others, i got a bit confused with the 'attach the fin' step :S! thank you again!!!
XDDDD That's is *so* cute. Not something to wear outside unless you're really daring, but oh man. It'd be cool to own one for the novelty. *laughs*<br/><br/>Those are really big craft eyes!!<br/>
:O why wouldn't you wear it outside? The whole town would be forced into submission by the power of the squid... or not.
I am a huge fan of silly hats in the winter time, but, being a marine biologist, this is just the best! All the lab's little pet cuttlefish will finally have someone on their side! &quot; Now who has the brains, puny humans!?&quot; they will say!
Not to sound stupid, but is there an easy way to print out those pattern pieces? Also, awesome hat, very creative. And a great instructable, helpful and easy to follow, thanks. :)
can you post more cute hat DIYs!!!
I will when I get some more together. :)
theres a internet game called roblox and you can get squid hats! :B
Someone sent me a message asking if I ever finished my Dr. Zoidberg version of this hat, which I did but completely forgot to post pictures. So here it is.<br> <br> As a note, I modified the pattern by making the triangle pieces shorter in height with a wider top angle so they form more of a dome when you sew them together. It worked out pretty well. eyes are black buttons sewn atop white ones.<br>
Pedal extenders are an ingenious <a href="http://www.cheap-uggs-boots.com/ugg-nightfall/" rel="nofollow"><strong>UGG Nightfall</strong></a> addition to the piano. At first sight, they look like a footstool and can serve the purpose of giving a child a place for the feet so they do not dangle freely, but <a href="http://www.cheap-uggs-boots.com/ugg-nightfall/" rel="nofollow"><strong>UGG Nightfall Boots</strong></a> they also have piano pedals. Piano pedals sit on the top, and underneath are posts that sit on the pedals of the piano, so that when <a href="http://www.cheap-uggs-boots.com/ugg-nightfall/" rel="nofollow"><strong>nightfall uggs</strong></a> the child pushed the pedal on the footstool, the piano pedals are pushed by the extenders. With an adjustable piano bench, the child can be at the <a href="http://www.cheap-uggs-boots.com/ugg-nightfall/" rel="nofollow"><strong>ugg 5359</strong></a> correct height to play the piano comfortably. As a beautiful piece of furniture a sheet music cabinet can take place with other pieces of furniture. But its real purpose is to keep the many pieces of music organized and out of sight. Most piano benches <a href="http://www.cheap-uggs-boots.com/ugg-nightfall/" rel="nofollow"><strong>ugg 5359</strong></a> can hold music, but this storage space is limited.
Thanks for the pattern! It worked great. I'll probably end up making a few more with my leftover fleece.
:D Looks like you did a fantastic job too! Yay!
What big, black, shiny, sweet eyes it has! So cute! &lt;3<br />
Hi all! I updated this instructable with pattern images that include the 1in marker. Sorry it took so long! <br /> <div id="refHTML">&nbsp;</div>
awesome pattern, but the measurements are off...<br /> the brim in the pattern piece is 8 inches across instead of 11 :(<br /> hoping I upsize everything well enough, I'm giving this to my friend tomorrow for her birthday<br />

the tentacles were to small, i had to make 'em bigger, i didn't to the brim either, I'll get a pic in a min.<br />
Pleeeeeeeeeeease send me a pdf too? it`s a really cool design but it`s a little difficult without the measurements.<br /> pollo.md.r@gmail.com<br />

It would reaaaaaaaally help if you could put some rough measurements for the patterns. :(

ZI'm goanna make one for camp
Do you have to use Velcro? or can u just let the little tentacles flop in the wind?
You can just let them flop around or even stitch them down instead. It's all up to you!
do they sell those size eyes in your local craft store or did you have to order them online? the power of the squid compels me.... ( to go eat calimari XD)
I haven't been able to find them again. I got a batch off Ebay a couple years ago. I'd try just scanning for them on auction sites I suppose. Some folks have used giant buttons and that is way cute. Also goes along with the Coraline movie. :) If you want to get fancy you could take some craft eyes and imbed them in a half sphere resin mold with resin dyed black(or any other color). That way youd have a good back for the eye and the size you want. It'd be pretty easy.
Aaaaaw that is soooo cute
u rock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
