Step 1: Cut Out Pattern Pieces

squidhatpattern3.jpg
squidhatpattern1.jpg
DSC00977.JPG
Print out pattern and cut out.

To save time, fold your fabric in half so that you are cutting out two pieces instead of one.

Place on polar fleece and cut out pattern.

I cut mine free form and just held the pattern down, but it might be a better idea to pin the paper to the fabric first.

Note: Before cutting decide if you want a hat brim that is stretchy or one that fits more precisely. If you want a stretchy brim, which I recommend, pull on your fabric to figure out which way the fabric stretches. Once you've got that place your pattern along the direction of the stretch.

If you don't want your brim to stretch place it in the direction the fabric does not stretch.

Nice hat! I'm a big fan of squids (see my blog: http://blog.nachotime.com/?tag=squid ). It reminds me of my halloween costume this year:

I've got the urge to make a bunch of these hats and run amok causing havok with my very own army of squidlings!

Your costume is awesome! Is the black part mesh so you can see and breathe okay? So cool... :) If you run amok show me some pictures of the chaos!
crabezoid says: Dec 4, 2008. 2:14 PM
I was going for the one-eyed monster squid look, but that wasn't too clear in the end. I might make some modifications for next year. With the time I spent on that costume, I'll get as much use out of it as I can!

This pattern is adorable! I'm making three for xmas presents, one in blue, one in lime green, and one in purple. I couldn't find craft eyes big enough, so I used buttons, and I stitched down the small tentacles instead of using velcro, so far my first hat came out great! thanks a ton :3

OMG I love the button eyes so much! I have to try that out next time. :D
goosezilla (author) says: Dec 6, 2008. 12:32 AM
Oh hey, how long did it take you to put it together? Just wondering what kind of time variable there might be on making these.
Shivv says: Dec 7, 2008. 5:07 PM
The first one(blue) took about 3 hours, the second one(green) was between 2 and 2 1/2, and the last one(purple) took about an hour. I'm going to make a slightly modified red Dr. Zoidberg one next :P

Shivv says: Dec 7, 2008. 5:10 PM
I really like the way they came out, and using a rotary cutter makes cutting the fabric go twice as fast. :) For my Dr. Zoidberg hat I'm going to use the same size buttons in white, and sew another, smaller black button on top of each for pupils.
goosezilla (author) says: Dec 7, 2008. 9:13 PM
You are so awesome!

Just wanted to post my success! I had to make an adjustment by multiplying the dimensions by like 1.2 cuz my head is big, and I took of that band and just hemmed the bottom with the big tentacles on the inside. But total success! Everyone is genuinely shocked that I made this suh-weet baby! =D Thanks!

Ah, at last I have found some people who appreciate cephalopods as much as myself. I have a huge squid fan and believe I will reincarnate into a squid when I die! As you can see, I am a weirdo, BUT squids do rule so I will definitely make this hat and prove to the whole world that squids are AMAZING!

Now, I feel the urge to wear a cheese hat. Can some one post a pattern for a cheese hat please?

XDDDD That's is *so* cute. Not something to wear outside unless you're really daring, but oh man. It'd be cool to own one for the novelty. *laughs*

Those are really big craft eyes!!
ALogan97 says: Dec 11, 2010. 11:42 AM
:O why wouldn't you wear it outside? The whole town would be forced into submission by the power of the squid... or not.

I am a huge fan of silly hats in the winter time, but, being a marine biologist, this is just the best! All the lab's little pet cuttlefish will finally have someone on their side! "Now who has the brains, puny humans!?" they will say!
Your Average Guy says: Oct 30, 2010. 8:36 PM
Not to sound stupid, but is there an easy way to print out those pattern pieces? Also, awesome hat, very creative. And a great instructable, helpful and easy to follow, thanks. :)
slilly2goose says: Oct 3, 2010. 9:46 AM

goosezilla (author) says: Oct 3, 2010. 12:53 PM

paperairplanecreator says: Sep 1, 2010. 5:56 AM
theres a internet game called roblox and you can get squid hats! :B
Shivv says: Aug 31, 2010. 7:33 PM
Someone sent me a message asking if I ever finished my Dr. Zoidberg version of this hat, which I did but completely forgot to post pictures. So here it is.

As a note, I modified the pattern by making the triangle pieces shorter in height with a wider top angle so they form more of a dome when you sew them together. It worked out pretty well. eyes are black buttons sewn atop white ones.

Thanks for the pattern! It worked great. I'll probably end up making a few more with my leftover fleece.
