Recently I visited Side Street Vintage in Bulimba, and while I was there the owner, Tracey taught me how to make these adorable washi tape feathers. They look so beautiful as decoration on a gift wrapped present, or even as part of a place setting. Here’s how easy they are to make.

Step 1: Steps 1 - 4

What you Need:

Washi tape in your chosen colours and designs, at least 15mm wideFlorist’s wireScissorsWire cuttersWhere to Buy: The washi tape used in this tutorial is from Side Street Vintage. You can also buy washi tape at craft stores and online. Florist’s wire is available at craft shops and discount stores.

1. Gather your equipment

2. Cut the florist wire to 23cm or 9 1/2 inches long (the florist wire I used was 46cm so I just had to cut it in half)

3. Starting about 12 cm or 4 3/4 inches from the edge of the wire, stick the washi tape down so the wire is centred

4. Extend the tape 1.5cm or 1/2 an inch from the end of the wire and then fold the washi tape back on top of itself, enclosing the wire within the tape.

Step 2: Steps 5 - 8

5. Use scissors to trim the top and bottom edges of the tape into a long curved shape – irregular is good.

6. Now make snips down one side of the washi tape cutting on a 35-45 degree angle stopping a few millimetres short of the centre wire. Be random when cutting so some cuts are closer together and others further apart.

7. Repeat on the other side of the washi tape.Make 4 or 5 snips at a 90 degree angle down each side of the feather. This will cut out small triangle of washi tape.

8. Finally ruffle up the edges of the tape, so the feather looks more realistic.
