Very expensive to warm at night the whole apartment when you sleep in a bed. Much better to save money on heating and warm a bed only. So I decided to make a heating blanket.
As the heating element I used the carbon tape. It looks like a thin, soft cloth and not interfere in a bed.
The carbon tape can be sewed, but instead it can be simply glued. Because of this I did it in just 1 hour!

Step 1:

To make the blanket I took 2 pieces of inexpensive fabric, 6 feet of flexible wire,
20 feet of carbon tape 15 mm from www.carbonheater.us, silver conductive wire glue paste, female plug 5.5 mm and iron-on no-sew hem tape.  The desired temperature can be determined from the table.

Step 2:

Cut a piece of fabric length of 5 feet (150 cm).
Put carbon tape zigzag. Zigzag shape can be any that you like.
Under the carbon tape to put iron-on hemming web tape
Gently press the carbon tape with an iron  that is stuck to the fabric.


Step 3:

Glue the wire to the carbon tape using silver conductive wire glue. Due to the silver glue, contacts will be very thin, very small, will not interfere in a bed. These contacts can be easily and quickly done, and they will be very reliable.
Squeeze between two layers of carbon tape some silver from the syringe, insert the bare wire, squeeze glue place until the glue is completely dry.

Step 4:

Put strips of no-sew hem tape along the entire length of the wire. Fold the edge of the fabric and press iron.

Step 5:

Put contour fabric no-sew hem tape.
Cover with second piece of cloth and gently press the iron over the whole area.

Step 6:

Solder the plug. I connect it to the power supply from my laptop. Work is finished.
Blanket ready:)

Step 7:

Blanket consumes about 40 watts. This power is enough not only for home beds, but also for a sleeping bag in a campaign. Then I connect the blanket to a battery 12 volts.

Blanket is a comfortable shelter, but it can also be put on a mattress
under a sheet.

Step 8:

Blanket can be embedded in a duvet cover, but also you can be covered by it alone.

Let my warm save you from danger,
And you'll never cry,
Close your eyes and sleep, my angel,
Sleep, dear, rock-a-bye.

During the day I use it to cover my feet in a chair.

Do you have to use that kind of wire?

Here's the connection.
<p>Please look at my pictures. In the first photo you can see that the part of the plastic insulation of wires removed and bare wire sewn to the carbon tape. It also shows that in the wire and carbon tape is applied a silver glue. Due of using a silver glue the bare part of wire can be very short. This is the most reliable way to connect.</p><p>In the second photo a long bare wire simply sewn to the carbon tape. Silver paste is not used, so a bare part of the wire must be very long. This connection method is very easy to do, but its reliability is not high enough. Over time the copper wire will oxidized and the contact may become unstable.</p><p>Unfortunately, your photos does not show how long the bare parts of wire are and if you used a silver glue. Please cut the white threads, open the twisted parts of carbon tape and show us the bare wire.</p><div> Connection the carbon tape is not difficult. I am sure together we will be able to do it.</div>

<p>I have found that by constructing the insulation layers of a bed, I can do far better with the way the bedding is assembled, that keeps me far warmer, than anything else.</p><p>Ideally - in a very cold climate, it's best to use a very thin and tight weave blanket on the very top, or even a couple of tight weave sheets, and then put the soft warm insulating blankets underneath the top layer...</p><p>The tight weave material on the top, stops or restricts the cold air from coming in underneath you, through the mattress, and then flowing through the low density insulating material, and then out of the top of the bed.</p><p>Since the coldest it gets here is like minus 5*C... and 45*C in summer.... </p><p>The effect is like an Inuit clothing. The animal hide (skin) on the outside, stops air moving through the fur, and the fur becomes a layer of stationary warm air, against the body.</p><p>This way to construct your bedding is many times warmer than a thin blanket on top of you and then a soft fully insulating layer over that.</p><p>If you can create the bubble of warm air to sleep in, this is what will keep you very warm. </p>
<p>Based on this graph (see reference at bottom) and ohms law, the resistance of this carbon tape is 17 Ohms per meter, Because V=I*R 12/.7=17 and the table show .7 amps to flow through 1 meter of tape at 12 Volts.</p><p>The resistance of dry skin can as low as 1,000 ohms/Inch, wet-saltiy skin however can be as low as 100 Ohms/Inch. with around 40 inches in a meter the resistance of one meter of wet-salty skin is around 4000 Ohms.</p><p>Because the carbon tape has a resistance far lower than that of skin and electricity always takes the path of less resistance human skin could not short out carbon tape.</p><p>Also typically a voltage of 50 Volts or greater is needed to shock someone.</p><p>Table Reference (http://www.carbonheater.us/images/Current-Length-Temperature.jpg)</p><p> Skin Resistance Referance (https://van.physics.illinois.edu/qa/listing.php?id=6793) </p>
<p>I can sometime sweat a lot at night.... wouldn't I get electrocuted one the wet path of my skin had a lower resistance than the carbon tape? With an electric blanket the heating wire is insulated in a liquid proof coating, but this seems to be insulated by just water absorbing cloth.... Thanks so much!</p>
<p>Yes, you should insulate it from your body but I recommend you to test what kind of insulation will be enough.</p>
This seems like a fatal flaw in this material. Either you have to coat it with a waterproof material or you can only use it in situations you know will stay dry. What do you do in your designs? Coat it with some kind of silicone sealer?
<p>Yes, you can seal it with a silicone or some waterproof material. I use it even for diving with a dry suit. </p>
<p>If you were to put this inside a metal, titanium, or another type of metal, 3 foot long, 1 inch wide, cylinder would there be any type of complications of it getting extremely hot or melting the metal? Also is there any way of making it waterproof and without melting the metal? </p>
<p>Again and again, I repeat that the carbon tape is a common heating element. It works in exactly the same way as nichrome wire, or any other heating element. Heat transfer of carbon tape at temperatures of 30 - 300 degrees is only 5% higher than nichrome ( but at 500 degrees - 25 % higher).</p><p>The main advantage of the carbon tape is its resistance to repeated bending.</p><p>And yes, you can put the tape in any metal, but between the tape and a metal must be some insulating material.</p><p>To make the carbon tape waterproof you can cover it with any silicone sealant.</p>

<p>Yes, you can glue the carbon tape into a PVC film or sealed with a silicone <br>sealant. But it is much better to use the tape in clothes and put under <br>the seeds some nichrome wire into a tube.</p><p>The carbon ribbon heating element is the same as any other heater. The main advantage of the carbon tape is that it can withstand repeated bending.</p>

I am not familiar with carbon tape, but this looks like a good idea. Is it safe? Is it efficient energy-wise?

Of course it can be improved.</p><p>From the viewpoint of energy <br>savings, the most effective positioning the heating element on the <br>mattress under the sheets. Then more heat remains under a blanket.</p><p>If you still need a blanket, <br>then to retain more heat you need to use a thicker outer fabric, <br>providing better insulation properties, for example, thick wool, <br>Thinsulate, and so on. <br><br>Using the AC adapter from the laptop <br>is convenient because there is already a short-circuit protection. <br><br>For added convenience, this blanket I connect via remote RF <br>dimmer. <p>The carbon heater is the most energy effective heater. Just like any other heating element, it requires compliance with the rules of safe operation. <br>One of the main advantages of the carbon tape is its resistance to repeated bending, which greatly increases the safety of use.</p>
