Introduction: DVD / CD Envelope

About: I love the ideas here on Instructables, because when I see some of the really crazy ideas, first I laugh, then I think, you-know-that-just might actually work! I hope to make more stuff in 2014. Just got to ge…

So this is a simple way of making home-made DVD envelopes from a single sheet of A4 paper. There are two designs. The first is a Square shape, the second is a House shape, both are made from a single sheet of A4 paper and can be printed off a standard home ink-jet printer.
(After that you can photo-copy them to save on the high cost of ink-jet ink.)

I used trial and error to make these DVD envelopes and have gone through various prototypes and experiments. I used a very basic drawing program on my old Apple MacBook. (Appleworks 6) and then converted them into PDF files to share the idea.
But anyone with a basic computer, microsoft based or mac based, can make these 'Origami' ideas. Be inspired and have a go.

All you have to do is begin with a basic A4 sheet of paper and 'Play' around with it and see what you can make with it. Then draw it up on your computer and print it off.

Its Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!
Well it has to be simple, otherwise I couldn't do it!

Step 1: The Square

To make them more interesting. I also print them onto coloured paper, yellow, blue orange etc. See the various shapes and colours in the photos.

The Square shape is more practical, it fits shelves cabinets and much easier for mass bulk storage of dozens of DVDs.

The House shape is a little more whimsical and interesting. Its main advantage is its stronger. Its also easier to ‘flick’ the envelope when searching through a pile of DVDs.

So once you have printed your first A4 sheet, your next step is to fold the sheet into its envelope shape.

Square. Fold along the top line of the square, then fold along the bottom of the square.

Step 2: More Folding

Next. Fold on the right of the square, then fold on the left of the square.

Next. Fold two ‘arrow’ flaps (This will help you to insert and secure the envelope   without glue or tape.)
A final touch, smooth down the folds and then write on the cover.

But not with the DVD inside..! Your pen might damage the DVD..!

Step 3: Next the House

House. Fold the diagonal ‘Roof line’ Both the left and right, to make a point.
(At this stage its a bit like make a paper plane...)

Next. Fold along the right side of the square, then fold along the left side.

Next. Fold along the bottom edge of the square.

Next. Fold the ‘Flap’ rectangle into the back of the envelope.

A final touch, smooth down the folds and then write on the cover.

But not with the DVD inside..! Your pen might damage the DVD..!
