They are probably the best Oreo cakes I have ever tried. A lot of cake's that I have experimented with before are like a vanilla cake with bits of Oreo in them, which didn't really give them enough Oreo flavor. But these were a lot better. I used a dark chocolate fudge cake mix instead of just a regular chocolate cake mix, which went really well with the cookies and gave the cakes just a little more flavor. So, in this recipe there is Oreo's in the cake, in the frosting, and at the bottom is a Oreo surprise. That's right, you put a whole Oreo at the bottom of the cake. The cookie stays firm, which makes it a little interesting to eat against the soft cake, but it actually gave a really yummy crunch. Overall this is an amazing cake. Super full of flavor and so fun!! Enjoy :)
Estimated Cooking Time: About 25 to 30 minutes

Ingredients
1 package Oreo Cookies, regular size
1 package Mini Oreo Cookies, for decoration (optional)
1 package chocolate cake mix (mix according to directions on box)
8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 cup butter (1 stick), room temperature
3 3/4 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
cupcake liners

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix packaged cake mix according to directions (do not bake). Line cupcake tins with liner, place a regular size Oreo cookie in the bottom of each liner. Take 1/2 of remaining cookies and chop coarsely and add to cake mix. Fill the cupcake tins. Bake for 15 minutes (or according to box directions). While cupcakes are baking make the frosting.

Cream together butter and cream cheese. Add vanilla, then add powdered sugar slowly until blended well. Chop remaining regular-sized Oreos very fine (I put the cookies in the food processor instead of trying to chop them up super fine and it worked out really well). Add to frosting. After cupcakes have cooled frost and decorate with Mini Oreos.

My icing came out too sweet, I'm wondering if I read the recipe wrong. Is it 3 and 3/4 cup powdered sugar or 3 x 3/4 cup powdered sugar?

The cupcake was good, but the frosting was terrible. Way too runny! Tried to thicken it, and it just wouldn't thicken! Looks terrible with runny frosting
hunteradara in reply to MommaJessSep 27, 2012. 7:43 PM
Adding more powdered sugar will really thicken it! I made it they came out good! I love this recipe! ;0
Frederbee in reply to MommaJessJul 15, 2012. 11:08 AM
I found adding more icing sugar worked for mine, as it was a bit too soft for my taste as well. Did you melt your butter, or just use soft? Melted butter won't emulsify with the sugar, but absorb it, making gloop.
KRyan89 in reply to MommaJessJul 3, 2012. 10:58 AM
I've made these four separate times now, and it is a family and work favorite; following the recipe the frosting has been just perfect every time .... Maybe your cream cheese or butter were spoiled, or not at room temperature ... This frosting recipe has become a favorite here!

These are the most delicious cupcakes I have ever made! Everyone that tried one absolutely loved it :) The best part is, they were fun & easy to make lol ... Thanks for the recipe! (For those of you having difficulty making the frosting from scratch, I bought the already made Pillsbury Whipped Supreme cream cheese frosting. I blended in the Oreo cookie crumbs with it in a separate bowl & it tasted delicious)

acobb2 says: Apr 17, 2012. 10:51 AM
I made these with my mom's chocolate cupcake recipe and it was soooooooo good! I got rave reviews from everyone. I did pretty much everything the recipe said to do except I didn't put crushed oreo in the icing. I got lazy there because my first batch of icing was a flop. Don't bother with the cream cheese icing. It was runny and I couldn't fix it. If you want to pipe the iciing on just make a butter cream icing and it is still awesome! I use 1/2 c. butter, 1/2 veg. shortening, 4 cups of icing sugar, 2 tsp vanilla ( I use clear vanilla to keep the icing nice and white) and 2 tsp of milk.

acobb2 in reply to acobb2Apr 29, 2012. 9:11 PM
Ya I don't know what went wrong. I followed the recipe. It was to runny to even put on the cupcake with a knife. I noticed alot of pple on here had the same problem.
treyes1 in reply to acobb2Apr 29, 2012. 8:40 PM
I used the cream cheese frosting they gave here, they weren't runny or anything, worked fine on my end. Maybe it's because I didn't pipe them out? Idk.
treyes1 says: Apr 29, 2012. 8:35 PM
I didn't chop up the cookies super fine for the frosting so I couldn't pipe them out, the chunks caused some blockage. Everyone enjoyed them though. They especially loved the Oreo surprise. Thanks for sharing. Here's how mine turned out:

Do they have to be refrigerated at all with the frosting or are they ok for at least a little while sitting out? Also, if I make the frosting ahead of time should I keep it in the fridge until the cupcakes are cooler?

Hey, I just made this recipe, it was delicious!!

I had one problem though. The icing was crispy, because of the sugar, and it wasn't firm enough to frost. I'm certain I did something wrong, but I don't know what. Any suggestions?

I modified the recipe a bit, I just used regular cream cheese frosting without adding the oreos to it. I didn't want to over do it with the oreos. A good choice, they came out perfect. Absolutely delicious! :-)

how many oreos in your package?
foodsnots (author) in reply to fabiothedrummerJan 8, 2012. 6:47 AM
Like about 35.
livelifelikelina says: Nov 29, 2011. 8:29 PM
Loved it. Will deffinitly make it again! The frosting was incredible, possibly the best i've had. Not overpoweringly sweet like normal buttercream icing but instead more like cheesecake icing because of the cream cheese. Make sure to blend the oreos finely though otherwise they become chunky in the frosting and it's impossible to pipe neatly out onto the cupcake. (had this problem and had to manually spread them on...)

350 degrees, is that Fahrenheit or Celsius?
foodsnots (author) in reply to CyberJacobNov 26, 2011. 8:00 AM
It's Fahrenheit. So it would be like 176 degrees in Celsius.
CyberJacob in reply to foodsnotsNov 26, 2011. 8:52 AM
yeah, I guessed that after I found my oven only goes to 300. mine aren't quite as perfect as yours (mine look crap), but they still taste great!

Looks wonderful! My friend's mom used to make a Oreo desert cake that was so rich you could barely eat more than a tablespoon per serving. I wish I had that recipe. I'll have to try these.
Fpoon says: Nov 13, 2011. 4:17 PM
Do you know how many estimated this will make? I don't have a super high budget but can make this as long as it makes more than like 4 ...
foodsnots (author) in reply to FpoonNov 14, 2011. 2:34 PM
It makes at least 24. When I made them it made about 28 but it all depends on how you fill your cups.
Fpoon in reply to foodsnotsNov 18, 2011. 11:42 AM
I finished them, and they sure did taste good...didn't look super pretty because I don't have a frosting squeezer. :D I think the amount of frosting is a bit of an Over kill, but that's just me...
foodsnots (author) in reply to FpoonNov 18, 2011. 12:46 PM
I'm so glad you guys liked them. And yes that amount of frosting is completely over kill :) I just set them up that way for the shot, but not actually to serve that much to each person.

firefly68 says: Nov 13, 2011. 3:32 PM
Oh! These would be fantastic for a party or potluck, and so easy. Where did you get those perfect liners, and what kind of piping tool do you use? They look very professional.
foodsnots (author) in reply to firefly68Nov 14, 2011. 2:40 PM
Thank you. I got the liners at Hobby Lobby, and I used a Wilton 1M tip to pipe the frosting. Also, the way I learned to pipe frosting is from youtube if that helps. Watch a couple of videos and it makes it so much easier.
kkoene says: Nov 11, 2011. 6:41 AM
UPDATE: The cupcakes turned out pretty good. The frosting is a little tart for my kids tastes. Any suggestions on that? Otherwise my wife LOVED them! Thanks for sharing!
bhand in reply to kkoeneNov 14, 2011. 6:35 AM
Add some powdered sugar to your frosting. Blend it in small amounts slowly & taste it as you go.

Trust me, I make cream cheese frosting all the time. It works wonders
kwinsor in reply to kkoeneNov 13, 2011. 11:18 PM
also use unsalted butter as the salt will usually bring out certain things such as the tartness ...
WindQueen in reply to kkoeneNov 13, 2011. 5:45 PM
You can try to play around with the cream cheese / butter proportions. Diminish the amount of cream cheese (causing the tart flavor) and increase the amount of butter. Just go with what tastes right. The nice thing about icing is that its not an exact science which allows you to play around with the recipe.

Mascarpone might work, but its also considerably pricier than cream-cheese (at my grocery store at least) so its one thing to consider.

Hope it helps :)
xrissy in reply to kkoeneNov 13, 2011. 4:52 PM
You could try mascarpone cheese, which is similar in texture, but nowhere near as tangy as cream cheese. Or try a butter frosting variation.
wirecutter says: Nov 13, 2011. 8:10 PM
Wow! A very nice one indeed
I made some yesterday a.m. for desert as some friends (6) that were arriving for supper and I wanted to be well clear from the kitchen before my wife started on that. After the cakes had cooled, I topped half with a cream cheese mix and the other half with butter frosting, and just before we started eating I arranged 5 of each on dinner plate but first cutting a cross through the bottom of the paper case and then putting all the cheese topped ones on the same plate adding two tea spoons of Baccardi to the plate, and the same with the frosting ones but this time I used Brandy.
Its a very good job I had made 12 of each as seconds where demanded! and have just now been asked to make some more, for one of the friends from last night, for next week but it looks like it might be for 26 !!!! ( I suppose I had better make 50!! or get my wife to make them!)...

I think i will die.... I MUST TRY THIS
wcarrera says: Nov 13, 2011. 6:54 PM
This sounds awesome. However, my only critique is that it should be made without any dairy products just like Oreo's.
kredwood says: Nov 13, 2011. 2:05 PM
If the bottom oreo is throwing you off, then to block out the "crispier" taste of that oreo I'd recommend deciding on your total for baking and leave that many out the night before to soften a little
Crafty Cathy says: Nov 13, 2011. 8:24 AM
They look beautiful and delicious.
kkoene says: Nov 10, 2011. 1:39 PM
Ok, word of caution from someone who is NOT a kitchen ninja....do not over blend your oreos or they will burn. NOT a pleasant smell.

Love It!
