They are probably the best Oreo cakes I have ever tried. A lot of cake's that I have experimented with before are like a vanilla cake with bits of Oreo in them, which didn't really give them enough Oreo flavor. But these were a lot better. I used a dark chocolate fudge cake mix instead of just a regular chocolate cake mix, which went really well with the cookies and gave the cakes just a little more flavor. So, in this recipe there is Oreo's in the cake, in the frosting, and at the bottom is a Oreo surprise. That's right, you put a whole Oreo at the bottom of the cake. The cookie stays firm, which makes it a little interesting to eat against the soft cake, but it actually gave a really yummy crunch. Overall this is an amazing cake. Super full of flavor and so fun!! Enjoy :)
Estimated Cooking Time: About 25 to 30 minutes

Ingredients
1 package Oreo Cookies, regular size
1 package Mini Oreo Cookies, for decoration (optional)
1 package chocolate cake mix (mix according to directions on box)
8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 cup butter (1 stick), room temperature
3 3/4 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
cupcake liners

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix packaged cake mix according to directions (do not bake). Line cupcake tins with liner, place a regular size Oreo cookie in the bottom of each liner. Take 1/2 of remaining cookies and chop coarsely and add to cake mix. Fill the cupcake tins. Bake for 15 minutes (or according to box directions). While cupcakes are baking make the frosting.

Cream together butter and cream cheese. Add vanilla, then add powdered sugar slowly until blended well. Chop remaining regular-sized Oreos very fine (I put the cookies in the food processor instead of trying to chop them up super fine and it worked out really well). Add to frosting. After cupcakes have cooled frost and decorate with Mini Oreos.

My icing came out too sweet, I'm wondering if I read the recipe wrong. Is it 3 and 3/4 cup powdered sugar or 3 x 3/4 cup powdered sugar?

The cupcake was good, but the frosting was terrible. Way too runny! Tried to thicken it, and it just wouldn't thicken! Looks terrible with runny frosting
hunteradara in reply to MommaJessSep 27, 2012. 7:43 PM
Adding more powdered sugar will really thicken it! I made it they came out good! I love this recipe! ;0

I found adding more icing sugar worked for mine, as it was a bit too soft for my taste as well. Did you melt your butter, or just use soft? Melted butter won't emulsify with the sugar, but absorb it, making gloop.

I've made these four separate times now, and it is a family and work favorite; following the recipe the frosting has been just perfect every time .... Maybe your cream cheese or butter were spoiled, or not at room temperature ... This frosting recipe has become a favorite here!

I LOVE THIS RECIPE! Thank you so much! The Icing recipe was absolutely perfect! I didn't have a mixer, so I had to mix it all by hand and it was still great for piping.

These are the most delicious cupcakes I have ever made! Everyone that tried one absolutely loved it :) The best part is, they were fun & easy to make lol ... Thanks for the recipe! (For those of you having difficulty making the frosting from scratch, I bought the already made Pillsbury Whipped Supreme cream cheese frosting. I blended in the Oreo cookie crumbs with it in a separate bowl & it tasted delicious)

I can't even stand Oreos, BUT I MADE THEM FOR A BAKE SALE AND BOUGHT MOST OF THEM FROM MY OWN GIRL SCOUT TROOP. long story short......THEY ARE REALLY GOOD!!!
acobb2 says: Apr 17, 2012. 10:51 AM
I made these with my mom's chocolate cupcake recipe and it was soooooooo good! I got rave reviews from everyone. I did pretty much everything the recipe said to do except I didn't put crushed oreo in the icing. I got lazy there because my first batch of icing was a flop. Don't bother with the cream cheese icing. It was runny and I couldn't fix it. If you want to pipe the iciing on just make a butter cream icing and it is still awesome! I use 1/2 c. butter, 1/2 veg. shortening, 4 cups of icing sugar, 2 tsp vanilla ( I use clear vanilla to keep the icing nice and white) and 2 tsp of milk.

Ya I don't know what went wrong. I followed the recipe. It was to runny to even put on the cupcake with a knife. I noticed alot of pple on here had the same problem.
treyes1 in reply to acobb2Apr 29, 2012. 8:40 PM
I used the cream cheese frosting they gave here, they weren't runny or anything, worked fine on my end. Maybe it's because I didn't pipe them out? Idk.
treyes1 says: Apr 29, 2012. 8:35 PM
I didn't chop up the cookies super fine for the frosting so I couldn't pipe them out, the chunks caused some blockage. Everyone enjoyed them though. They especially loved the Oreo surprise. Thanks for sharing. Here's how mine turned out:

Do they have to be refrigerated at all with the frosting or are they ok for at least a little while sitting out? Also, if I make the frosting ahead of time should I keep it in the fridge until the cupcakes are cooler?
