As the warmer seasons approach, outdoor activities become part of daily life. I have always enjoyed corn hole and have made a couple sets for friends. Here is a how to guide for decorating a set for your next party.

Step 1: Materials

Paint

Paint Brush/Roller

Painters Tape

Unpainted Cornhole Boards

Sandpaper/Sander (Preferably Finer Grit Sandpaper)

X-acto Knife (if you want to hand paint logo)

Team Logo Sticker (If you want a team logo on boards)

Step 2: Beginning With a Design

Before you start on your boards, it is an enormous help to start with a design on paper. Usually before I start I will design the board on a program such as photoshop or paint.

Step 3: The First Layer Is Important

Regardless of the design you have in mind you first have to have a solid first coat. For painting that you should use primer(a white or gray paint that is made specifically for painting over), the primer will raise the burs at the top of the wood. After the prime coat drys you need to sand those burs off to create a smooth painting surface for the rest of your project.

Step 4: Putting the Tape Down

Remember that where you put the tape is where there will not be any paint. So for example with the flag design I would put tape down where the white is, and then paint over the tape with either red or blue depending on what part I was working on.

Step 5: How to Put a Shape on the Board

Firstly, if you would like to put a team logo on a board, the best thing to do is buy a sticker online. Trust me it will save you a lot of heartache. But if you want to put a shape on the board, it is simple.

Put tape down where you want the shape. So if you want a bunch of stars on your board then take a couple pieces of tape and put them down where your star will go.

Next print some stars out at the size you would like from a computer program (I use Microsoft Word’s clipart)

Finally print these star shapes out and put them over the tape you had put down earlier. Once this is done you can cut the stars out with a blade or X-acto knife,it will cut through the paper as well as the tape underneath. Now you can peel the tape off and it will leave a star shape behind.

Step 6: Peel the Tape Up

After at least two or three coats it is time to take the tape up. MAKE SURE THE PAINT IS DRY. I would give it a whole 24 hours before peeling the tape up, if not the paint will come up with the tape leaving jagged edges.

Once you have peeled bake tape, step back and look at your beautiful board.
