Introduction: Decorative Concrete - Filled No-Fines Method

Picture of Decorative Concrete - Filled No-Fines Method

No-fines is a concreting technique where there are no fine aggregate (sand) included, resulting in porous concrete. I have modified the method by filling the voids with a coloured cement to produce a mottled spotty pattern.

Step 1: Things You Will Need

  • dust mask
  • latex gloves

  • white cement
  • yellow and blue pigment
  • aquarium gravel

Mini concrete vibrator:

  • form (plastic bottle)
  • water
  • disposable cups
  • popsicle sticks
  • grinding pad (or other sanding/grinding tools)

Step 2: Instruction Video

Refer to the above instruction video for a demonstration of the method.

If you would like any further clarification or support on any of the steps, please feel free to leave me a comment and I will help as best as I can.

This can also be done using a very dry, crumbly mixture and hand packing it into the mold. Doing this, you can still use the fines and makes the mix stronger. Recently I mixed up 2 colors of hand pack mix and after it cured I back filled the surface voids with a black slurry.

Hi armorer243. You've done a great job, your concrete looks very nice. I have also used the crumb method in a similar way (no back filling in mine) and I have an instructable about it here:
