Dexter Blood Slide Suckers: Eat At Your Own Risk!

Step 6Serve Suckers

Serve Suckers
Now how do you eat these beautiful bio-hazards.  Its important to protect your fingers from the dangerous objects.  I suggest serving these suckers with a pile of latex gloves.  It provides an easy way to safely eat these treats as well as up the uncomfortable factor.

You can also serve with tweezers.  I took a quick visit to the Science Surplus Store hoping to find a wooden slide box. No luck!  So I just got one of the cheesy slide kits which came with a cardboard box to display the slides at an angle.  Maybe for next year, I’ll try to find a box on ebay or something.

I purchase small flat mirrors from the dollar tree to use for etching. Usually a box at a time. These displays have a styrofoam bottom with slits. Looks just like what you are using.

Awesome project.  You could get (more) creative/nerdy and make different types of slides.  The ones you made are peripheral blood smears.  You could also make bacterial smear slides (like Gram positive (purple) or Gram negative (pinkish) but use food colouring instead of Gentian violet) or tissue slides. Jello petri dishes could be awesome too.  Red jello with streaks of greenish brown would make perfect replicas of blood plates with hemolytic bacteria.

I worked as a lab researcher in infectious diseases for the year and a half after I graduated from college until recently.  I admit that I am a huge biology nerd who is currently coming up with halloween lab candy ideas instead of working on medical school applications....

You can get slide holders, slide boxes, slide books (which would be easy to make yourself) or a Coplin Jar for display.  [Coplin Jars are really cool but don't buy a used or "antique" jar.  They almost certainly contain deadly chemicals like xylenes.]

Some lab supply companies give out samples of their products.  If you don't work in a hospital or research institute, make friends with a lab rat (grad students are good).  Research hospitals often have "events" wherein all the big companies come and give out samples, pens and other paraphernalia.

Wow, my first comment on instructables is ridiculously nerdy.
