Introduction: Dispersion Effect | GIMP | Photoshop Alternative

Hi Everyone, Here I'm gonna show you How to create a Dispersion/ Disintegration/ Pixel explosion Effect using the Open Source Software called GNU Image Manipulation Program. I already posted a Video about this topic on YouTube

If you don't know about GIMP? GIMP is the Alternative for Adobe Photoshop which is also free of cost. Let's Jump into this trick!!

Step 1: Open an Image

  • Open GIMP after Downloading and Installing it.
  • Drag and Drop the Image into it

Step 2: Draw the Path Around the Subject Using Path Tool

  • Select Path Tool
  • Draw the path around the Subject

Step 3: Make the Path Into Selection

  • Right Click inside the Image
  • Select - From path

Step 4: Cut the Selection

  • Ctrl + X = Cut the Selection

Step 5: Paste As New Layer

  • Go to Edit - Paste as - New Layer

Step 6: Create a New White Layer for Background

  • Click the New Layer icon
  • Select White and Click OK
  • And Delete the Previous Background Layer

Step 7: Move the Subject Layer to the Extreme Left or Right

  • Move the Subject Layer to the Left or Right according to your Dispersion Effect using Move Tool
  • Then Make the Layer to Image Size

That's it. now you create a disintegration effect with free software.

Step 8: Duplicate the Subject Layer

  • Duplicate the Subject Layer
  • Place it in between the Subject Layer and Background Layer
  • Name it as Warp layer

Step 9: Go to Filter - Distorts - IWarp

  • Make the warp layer Active
  • Go to Filter - Distorts - IWarp

Step 10: With Move Tool Distort the Image

  • In IWarp Select Move
  • Then move the preview image to distort it
  • Then Click OK

Step 11: Adding Layer Mask

  • Add Layer Mask with Black for Warp Layer
  • Add Layer Mask with White for Subject Layer

Step 12: Select Paint Brush Tool

  • Select Paint Brush Tool from the Tool Bar

Step 13: Choose Any Splatter Brush

  • Choose any Splatter Brush
  • Here I choose Splats 01

Step 14: Brush the Edges in Subject Layer Mask With Black As the Foreground Color to Remove the Edges

  • Make Black as the Foreground Color
  • Make the Subject's Layer Mask active
  • Brush the Edges to remove it

Step 15: Make the Foreground Color As White

  • Make the FG Color as White
  • Then Make the Warp Layer's Layer Mask Active

Step 16: Brush in the Region to Get the Distorted Image Back in Warp Layer's Layer Mask

  • Brush it over the Region in Warp Layer's Layer Mask
  • And Make it look like Disintegrated
