Introduction: DoDo Case

After being briefed and given the DoDo Case, our team and I constructed the DoDo Case as fast as we could because we only had around a week to add an accessory or improve the DoDo Case in some way that would be appealing to other people.

Step 1: Thoughts on Paper

In this first step, my team and i brainstormed ideas to improve the DoDo Case (virtual reality). We threw all of our ideas on paper and decided that we wanted to make something the other teams weren't going to build. We came to a consensus that we would make an Arduino motion sensor that would detect obstacles in front of the DoDo Case. (i.e wall, other people, etc.)

Step 2: Arduino

In this build we used an Arduino Micro to power the proximity sensor part. The physical components consist of:

1 Arduino Micro. Any microcontroller will work, but the Micro is compact and fits on a breadboard.

2 red LEDs.

1 resistor for the leds.

1 ultrasonic sensor. We used the PING))) sensor from Parallax, but anything will work (again).

1 half-size breadboard.

A USB cable to power it all.

The circuit was built on a breadboard, and the breadboard was attached to the side of the Dodo Case that doesn't have the magnet. The leds were attached to pins 6 and 7, while the ping was attached to pin 11. Some example code was modified to turn on the leds whenever the ping detected you were close to a wall. The breadboard was mounted onto the side of the Dodo Case, and everything was put onto the breadboard. The leds were taped inside the Dodo Case directly above the lenses, so the leds are in front of the top of the lens. Surprisingly, you can't see the leds until they turn on. The entire electronics build worked after a few modifications!

Step 3: Assembly

In this next step, my team and I attached the motion sensor to the actual DoDo Case. We advise using tape of some sort, because we were afraid that we would damage the sensor if we used anything else, and we wanted to be able to detach the sensor in case of a flaw or failure.

Step 4: Accessory

In this step, my team and I decided to add a head strap so the DoDo Case would remain secure while in use. Without a head strap, you have to physically hold the DoDo Case up to your face, which we thought obstructed the amount of fun you have while using the case. We also decided to use high temperature hot glue gun to make sure the strap stayed secure.

Step 5: The Final Product

And with that, the final product is here. Fully equipped with a adjustable head strap and arduino motion sensor, which we hope will improve the use of the DoDo Case for all to enjoy.
