This is a cookie recipe that your dog will drool over!
Step 1: Needed
5 or 6 cups whole wheat flour
2 tblsp honey or brown sugar
1 packet yeast
1/2 cup wheat germ (may use flax seed or regular oatmeal)
1/2 cup chicken broth (preferably no salt)
1 tsp dried chopped parsley
Step 2: Here We Go
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix the packet of yeast with about 1/4 cup of warm water and stir well until dissolved.
Step 3: Add 1 Egg
You can use both hands to crack the egg. Then add the parsley, brown sugar or honey, half a can of chicken broth and stir well. Mmmm!
Step 4: Wheat Germ
About a half cup of wheat germ, flax seed or oatmeal will add some extra flavor and texture to the cookies. Please don't use instant or flavored oatmeal.
Step 5: Now for the Flour
I usually start by mixing 2 cups of whole wheat flour with the broth mixture. It wil turn into a gooey glop! Keep adding flour in half-cup increments until you have a firm but sticky ball of dough. If you use too much flour just add a little warm water.
Step 6: Rollin' Rollin' Rollin,
Flour up a cookie pan and spread it over the entire surface. The same is done to whatever surface you are using to roll and cut the dough. Place a small bowl of flour nearby. Start with a wad of dough about the size a golf ball. (You can use a larger amount if your surface is big enough.) Flatten it out and then roll it out Keep sprinkling flour on the dough and flipping it as you roll so it does not stick to the rolling pin or prep surface. Roll it out to approximately 1/8 inch thick. If you go much thicker the cookies will not be as crispy.
Step 7: Cut!
Use a cookie cutter and start stamping 'em out. You can get bone shaped cutters at many pet or kitchen supply stores. I took an ordinary round one and bent it by hand into the shape of a bone. Lay the cookies out on the floured baking sheet. Remember, If they stick to the sheet now they'll really stick after baking. Just keep adding dough, rolling and cutting until the pan is full.
Step 8: Bake
Place the pan in the 350 degree oven and bake for 30 minutes. Remove them from the oven and flip the cookies. Be careful, the pan is hot. You may need a spatula to get some of them loose. (More flour next time!) Place them back in the oven for another 15 minutes. Let them cool and you are done!
Step 9: The Payoff
After cooling, the cookies are very crisp and tasty. They are a lot cheaper than store-bought and have no preservatives. They're fun to make too. Stadger, Bunchkin, Smudge and Banana Pants love 'em!
