Introduction: Dollar Bill Bow Tie

This guide will teach you how to fold a bow tie out of a dollar bill. However, we can only teach you to make it. As with any bow tie, the most important part is how you wear it. It is how you wear it that will decide if this will be a cute novelty or serious fashion statement.

Tools:
A flat, hard surface

Materials:
A dollar bill
A paper clip

Step 1: Prepare to Begin Folding

Place the dollar bill on a hard surface.

Step 2: Fold in Half

Fold the dollar bill in half, hamburger style, making sure that half of the face shows along the outside of the fold.

Step 3: Fold in Half Again

Fold in half again, hot dog style.

Step 4: Open the Fold and Press the Corner In

Lift up of the fold that was just made and press down on the corner to create a flat triangular shaped region.

If this step is confusing watch the video below for a full demonstration.

Step 5: Repeat on the Opposite Side

Flip the dollar bill over and repeat the previous step.

Step 6: Fold Into a Pentagon

Fold both triangle regions, one on each side, in half along their center line to create a pentagon that has George Washington’s face at the top corner.

Step 7: Fold the Squared Portion Up

Fold the square bottom portion up over the pointed part to turn the pentagon into two rectangles.

Step 8: Repeat on the Other Side

Flip the dollar bill over and repeat the previous step on the opposite side to make one rectangle.

Step 9: Fold the Corners In

Fold the inside corners to the middle of the opposite side so that they meet along the center of the small rectangle.

Step 10: Repeat on the Opposite Side

Flip the dollar bill over and repeat the previous step on the opposite side.

Step 11: Make a Side Flap

Fold the longest side of the triangle up over the pointed part as far as you can can without tearing the paper.

Step 12: Make a Second Side Flap

Flip the dollar bill over and repeat the previous step to make a second side flap.

Step 13: Pull the Flaps Apart

Pull apart the two flaps on the side and press down on the pointed portion in the middle until George Washington’s face is visible in the middle of the square.
  • If you find the bow tie coming apart, try pinching the back to hold the bow tie together.
  • If this step is confusing, watch the video below for a complete demonstration of this step

Step 14: Attach the Paperclip

Flip the bow tie over and clip a paper clip to the middle.

Step 15: Start Wearing Your Bow Tie

Use the paper clip to attach the bow tie to your collar or lapel.

Step 16: Wear With Confidance

Congratulations! You have completed your dollar bill bow tie. The bow tie should have George Washington's face in the center and look like the above picture.
